I recently tested a Z4 3.0. It's 67k cdn for the 3.0 but only 54k for the 2.5. The thing is only the 3.0 comes with SMG but i'd rather pay less for the 2.5. Hard to justify the 13k more for a few more ponies and options like SMG. :hs:

Should I ante up and get the SMG 3.0 or play it cheap and get a 2.5 with s-s-s-slow steptronic. I had a e46 328i before with steptronic and the slowness of the shifting was uncanny.

Meh, was at a Porsche dealer earlier with a buddy when he went to get his Cayenne and I saw some used 996 Porsches from '99 for 65-70k with options. Awfully tempting too.

Cliff notes: Just want a cruising car...but who doesn't want more ponies? Question is justifying the increase in cost. :)

The 2.5 Z4 5 speed isn't too bad. It was fun beating on it as a loaner car.

If you want a convertible with a little more power and lighter on your wallet, maybe you should consider a turbo miata or S2000.

Fellow m3 owner. :big grin: How does the Z4 2.5 feel compared to an e46 325i or 328i?

I dunno, I tried the Miata and it's great but just doesn't feel as solid as a bimmer. Few friends of mine have s2's and I know it's a good car with an awesome shifter but doesn't seem like a GT cruiser.

Also considering the Audi TT now. :big grin:

    Alright thanks for the #'s.

I'm guessing the 2.5 will do 7.7-8.0 and 16 in the quarter with the steptronic. Seems good enough.

The Z4 is alot more fun then the 325. Speed wise, its nearly the same, although the Z4 sounds meaner. I've never driven the 328 as a loaner but the 325 isn't as much fun as the Z4.

Get the Z4 in 5spd. The gearbox isn't nearly as bad as the M3, comparing it to other BMW's its actually got a pretty short throw and is light at the same time.

What's this I hear about the SMG's on the Z4's not being the same as the M3 ones? Isn't that good? HAha, M3 SMG's stink for launches.

None of the current BMWs with SMG have the same SMG system on the M3. The M3 SMG is curently the most advanced that BMW offers. I am sure that the new version on the M6 and M5 will be better. I have no problem launching my M3 with SMG. Just takes a little practice like all things.

Yah, I read on bimmer.org on how to launch it but the guys were sayin the clutch only lasts for 20 launches then it's a $$$ replacement? also, the ecu records the #s? :ugh:

Im thinking that they do offer the SMG on the 2.5 as long as you get the Sport package....
    Checked....yes they do.
The SMG is faster than the manual by just a fraction. Also you have to learn how to time the gas pedal when the car shifts, otherwise it jerks. (Just let off the gas a tad when you shift it)

Actually, you need to stay ON the gas when shifting for smooth shifts.
