What can a person do with it?

Lets say you go to a persons website, they have your IP because you went there.

Can you search and see what other websites that person has been to?

about the only thing you can get from an IP is who their ISP is, and a general idea where they are geographically. Not too specific, not even to a city, usually -- but to a region.

You could do a port-scan with the IP but that won't get you much, usually.

edit : this is C&P, not OT. You will usually get better information here, and avoid the crap that OT brings... But the sacrifice is that you can't expect to keep hitting "refresh" and see new replys.

So, a person couldn't tell where you have been on the net with your IP#?

then it wouldn't be *just* your IP, now would it?

Furthermore, having a court order would not require them to have your IP, address. Any uniquely indenfitying piece of information would suffice. Furthermore, even if you did have an IP, you would also need a TIME and DATE, which also does not satisfy *just* the IP, requirement. :mamoru:

lots of stuff can be done if you know a persos's IP address.

[1] launch a DOS attack and cripple his machine
[2] snake a trojan through it by sniffing out the open ports
[3] spider thru the web to look at the pages viewed by the machine...

    its scary...really...

Under the Patriot Act II you can get government pics of a person's vagina/penis with their IP address.
