yesterday at the gym v. powerlifting

    yesterday at the gym, i saw this guy that i always see in there... old dude, used to be real big into powerlifting and stuff...

    he asked how i was doing and i said something about it being deadlift day, so i was in good spirits

    then he asked how much i was lifting and i told him... then he busts out with "so, when're ya gonna start competing?"
    apparently, he thinks i'd do pretty well... but i dunno

    ...i'm on the fence... he said i should seriously consider it and at my bodyweight, i'd do pretty well, but :dunno:

    haven't maxed in forever... yesterday i pulled 435x5 at the end, though :dunno:

    bench sucks
    squat's "ok"

    good point... this meet even has a "raw" category so i wouldn't have to buy/learn gear

    I just competed for my first time this summer. 3 maxes on deadlift...
    I could have pulled more on my last attempt, but I got 3rd place and a trophy so I am not complaining. I didn't have any of my equipment or anything with me either. No belt anything. Go for it!

    Doesnt hurt to try but be prepared to have much younger kids blow you away.

    He also says that there's gonna be another competition in January at the fit Expo at the pasadena convention center. DO IT MAN!

    AAU is raw, I believe. Go and have fun bro. The rush of competing is so worth it. Dont give a fuck about anyone else, go in and have fun for yourself.

    there's raw and geared sections, according to the signup sheet (yeah, i'm looking at the sign up sheet, shutthefuckup)

    I remember when I did my comp I registered in APF and all my friends were like WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING YOU'LL COMPETE AGAINST DUDES IN GEAR!!!!11

    Same thing happened to me, and thats why I did my first competition. It was fun. Just go do it.

    The deadlift isn't bad at all for your weight.

    If you can pull 435 x 5 at the end of your workout pretty cleanly then your max could be in the lower 500's; at 180lbs that's not bad. Even better, cut down a bit before the weigh in and try to get down to 175 or so.

    You probably won't win, but you never know... and at the very least it is an opportunity to meet some cool people and say that you competed. :bigthumb:

    Sign up for it, at least it sets a real goal for you to aim towards

    maybe try to find out what the last shows numbers look like in your weight class too

    yeah don't fret about how you'd do - just go and do it. Not stressful, it's fun, it'll get you motivated, and you'll be around a ton of guys way stronger than you
