well if you're gonna take it to someone else, then do it.

otherwise run seatools and memtest86 on it. If those both pass, did you install your chipset and other drivers? If so, and the system boots, run prime95.

How many partitions are on the hard drive? Is Windows on the first partition?

What i'm curious about is what problem caused you to do a reformat in the first place.

Obviously if the problem was a hardware issue, a reformat isn't going to fix it.

The OP says he restarted the computer while it was still installing Windows. So it seems to me the error is most likely due to the an incomplete/incorrect/corrupt installation of the OS. I don't think the OP is really curious as to why it's giving an error, he just wants it fixed.

that's how I read it. Put in windows install disc and start over again.

I had that happen with a new computer once (yes it was an HP :noes:) during the initial setup. I just put in the install disc again and started from scratch.

If that doesn't work then it's prolly a hardware issue, then I can't help.

This sounds like the smart thing to do. If not reformat and start from scratch........

that's what I'm thinking...I went for the second reformat attempt (pop in the windows disc back in etc.) and nothing is happening.

can't even get pass that annoying black error screen...if it helps, I could go to the setup screen (press f12...where u can change settings and what to boot first etc.)

problem is, I no longer see my cd drive when looking in the setup screen.

my dell is finally giving up on me after all these years. :wtc:

(ps. thanks for the replies everybody, hopefully I get this shit figure out) :wavey:

I didn't say that a hardware issue caused all the problems. I said if.

But it certainly seems more than coincidental that the hardware is now acting up.

does the bios detect the cd drive?
from your description,.. it seems to me that your cd drive died mid install, resulting to a corrupt/unfinished install of the OS on the hdd.

    check cables.
    try a diff cd drive.

So, basically what you're saying is that Windows is not installed at the very beginning of the drive. I suspect this could be the problem.

Delete both partitions, create one new one, and reinstall.

We almost need a template here for people to fill in when they want help.

It could be something like a basic form where the thread starter could just fill in the blanks and hit submit.
And there could be a space at the bottom where they could give a general description of the problem.

I think it would save a lot of questions and general second guessing that goes on around here.

And at the end of it all, the form can get sent to /dev/null and a big RTFM can be displayed for the user!

that's the thing...I don't know how to get back to the blue screen to delete/install windows on one of the partitions since the "error screen" keeps preventing me from doing so :wtc:

ps. thanks again for all the replies :wavey:

The BIOS is trying to boot from the hard drive, because it's detected that there is some kind of operating system there. Go into the BIOS and tell it to always try to boot from the CD drive first, then boot from the hard drive second.

the funny thing is, I config it so that it would boot from the CD drive first (waaaay before the reformat and everything), but since it no longer detects the CD drive all of a sudden...its been booting from the hard drive first (I think)

dunno what else to do really..

what is cmos? and I already tried the diff cables too :sadwavey:

On your motherboard, you'll have two or three pins, with a jumper on them.
Usually it sits very close to the battery.
What it does, is reset the bios to default settings.

You just take the jumper and move it over one pin to connect the other two pins, or the two pins in cases where there are only two.

You only need to do that for a couple of seconds, then move the jumper back.

It should look similar to this.
