Republicans, after reviewing the latest version of the proposal in a closed-door meeting, balked at giving automaker federal aid unless their powerful union agreed to slash wages next year to bring them into line with those of Japanese carmakers.

:hsugh: I don't see a whole lot of people split on those issues, most were either for or against both.

I hate unions, hopefully they can restructure somehow without involving the unions :squint:

    BREAKING NEWS

    updated 2 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - A $14 billion emergency bailout for U.S. automakers collapsed in the Senate Thursday night after the United Auto Workers refused to accede to Republican demands for swift wage cuts.

Republican Sen. George V. Voinovich of Ohio, a strong bailout supporter, said the UAW was willing to make the cuts — but not until 2011.

The UAW is a parasite that slowly killed it's host.

Bwhahahahaha The UAW just fucked themselves.

The big three need to look at this like an opportunity. Declare reorganization bankruptcy, pull the plug on all the union contracts and start fresh. They'll never get the chance again to be non-union.

Oh please, it's not like they're going to stop making cars. In fact all it will do is force them into a Chapter 11 reorganization, and free them from the UAW if they're fucking smart.

They end up going bankrupt having no choice but to void their contracts with the UAW and rebuild from there. They probably won't be called GM if they make a comeback.
