Yep, that's why you don't stripe your server's disks

I do some work for this guy who likes to spend a lot of money on computers and use a lot of fancy words that don't really make any sense. He had this computer at home with two 74GB raptors setup as raid0. About a year ago, he had me reformat/reload XP Pro because hackers were stealing his identity. OK, whatever. I warned him about the stripe set but he didn't care.

Some time in the last year, he had a friend decide that he didn't really need a server at the office and his home computer would make a good workstation/server at the office. So, this machine booting off the stripe set winds up holding all of their important files.

I got a call today that it wouldn't boot up. Yep, the stripe set shit itself taking the OS and the data with it. The machine wasn't on a UPS or even a surge supressor so who knows what killed it. The good news is that they have a backup of the data, the bad news is that its a month old. Oh well. Not my problem.

As stubborn as I am, I know to listen to you guys when you say to not use a striped array.

But but but...three disks cost more than two! And RAID5 is slower than RAID0!
