UFC Relegates Andrei Arlovski to UFC 82 Preliminary Card

A heavyweight fight between Andrei Arlovski (11-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) and Jake O’Brien (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) will not be aired live as part of the UFC 82’s pay-per-view broadcast, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) learned over the weekend.

UFC 82 takes place March 1 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva meets Dan Henderson in the night’s main event.

Arlovski, the UFC’s former heavyweight champion and arguably its biggest star during his reign as a title-holder, is currently on the last fight of his UFC contract, which expires April 15. Rather than sign an extension, he will finish out his contract and then shop the free agent market. Although they haven’t ruled out a return to the UFC, Arlovski and his management team could likely command big money from other organizations such as EliteXC, M-1 Global and HDNet Fights.

So, is his spot on the preliminary card punishment for Arlovski’s decision not to re-sign with the organization? Only the UFC knows for sure. However, keep in mind that Arlovski hasn’t been in an un-televised fight since UFC 40 — which was five years and nine fights ago.

UFC 82 contains a number of main-card-worthy fighters. In addition to Arlovski, “The Ultimate Fighter 1” stand-out Josh Koscheck will also be stuck on UFC 82’s un-televised preliminary card. Koscheck meets Ohio fighter Dustin Hazelett at the event. (With Arlovski and Koscheck relegated to the preliminary card, a fight between Diego Sanchez and David Bielkheden has been placed on the televised main card.)
    The full card now includes:
    MAIN CARD
    • Champ Anderson Silva vs. Dan Henderson (for middleweight title)
    • Heath Herring vs. Cheick Kongo
    • Yushin Okami vs. Evan Tanner
    • Jon Fitch vs. Chris Wilson
    • David Bielkheden vs. Diego Sanchez
    PRELIMINARY CARD
    • Andrei Arlovski vs. Jake O’Brien
    • Luke Cummo vs. Luigi Fioravanti
    • Dustin Hazelett vs. Josh Koscheck
    • Jorge Gurgel vs. John Halverson
    • Chris Leben vs. Alessio Sakara

arlovski and dana must really be butting heads. I guess if O'Brian wins will be seeing the fight.

  9. I need to figure out how good dustin's standup is. He's a huge underdog on the odds.

Why in the fuck would you do this?

You're the single biggest fight org. in the entire world at this point, and you do nothing but alienate yourself by dicking around your big name guys. :ugh:

  17. it's to show the other big name guys that you win all the negotiations, and that you're willing to let a top guy sit on the shelf if he doesn't sign the contract you want him to sign.

Wow, talk all the business you guys want, but thats a pretty shitty thing to do to one of the guys that was in the spotlight right around when the UFC was blowing up. So what if he wants more money, its up to AA and every other fighter to do as they will with their careers once contracts are up. But to say ok fuck you then we won't even show your fight is pretty weak imo.

Controlling your employees through punishment FTL.

Doesn't sound like White has ever spent a day in his life managing anything other than fighters.

In no other orginization would somebody be penalized for doing what's best for them. Hell, if I walked in my boss' office right now and told him I needed 50% more money the worst thing he could do is tell me to walk. The UFC doesn't seem to have any interest in letting people leave, but has no intentions of giving them any incentive to stay.

  22. well, on the other hand, if Arlovski says "give me more money or i"ll walk" UFC has to let some guys walk like that, or else they will have a crappy negotiating position.

Of course, if I'm not mistaken, Arlovski could very well re-sign with the UFC after this fight. It's just because they wanted him to re-sign before his contract was up, rather than negotiating once he was done.

The UFC is in a precarious spot for sure. They're growing like mad, and are going to have to realize that as they grow, the big name guys who get people to buy PPV's are going to demand a premium. There's no way in hell a Chuck Lidell or a Randy Coture is going to fight now for the same thing they did 3 or 4 years ago. That's just the name of the game. As demand grows so should their paychecks. That's just basic business.
