was thinking about buying a 24-70 for a while now, but really didn't want to put down 1100 bucks. was looking at used ones for around 950 or so, but that wasnt a huge amount of savings. was seriously debating on buying a tamron 28-75 again but the loud slow focus and the moving focus ring made me think twice. couple days ago, friend with the 28-70 said he was selling his for 500. 95% of the quality at 50% of the cost. had to have it. cant wait till it gets here.

Just be careful with older canon discontinued glass, Parts are drying up. If the AF switch were to break for example you may be out of luck. I know this to be true for the magic stove pipe (80-200 2.8)

yea, thats what i heard. the 28-70 was discontiuned back in 04, so its not too old. i think the 80-200 was discontinued in 98 or something, right?

L glass is the win. value on glass doesnt drop as steeply as consumer/prosumer glass.

having used one several times, i can say that its a fantastic lens. but not very useful IMO on a crop body. i have a crop body, but i also have 17-40L and 70-200 2.8 IS so im pretty well covered until i buy a FF camera.

maybe its just me, but i found the whole 24-70 range to be the least useful. if i was gonna get my first L glass, i'd get a wide angle or a tele.

Well, i already have a 10-20 sigma. i dont have a tele, not much use for one. I was thinking about getting the 70-200 2.8 for a tele. but i need a good walk around so i was leaning toward the 24-70 first.

For the record, the Tamron 28-75 does not have very loud focusing. Not as quiet as USM, but not nearly as loud as the 17-50.

i'd say the noise level out of the tamron was the same as the 50mm 1.8

and teh moving focusing ring was annoying as all hell.

and it didnt like to focus very well in low light
