And made it down to apply for a handgun (to purchase) permit. Anyway.

    What do you guys recommend.

    Budget 400-600 for first gun,

Also, is there a limit to number of guns purchased at a time? I assumed this permit should be good for 12 months and about as many(up to a certain amt, which is...?) handguns as I want.

you need a permit to buy a handgun? sucks.

I'd say go to a range that rents firearms and try a bunch out.

That being said, I think the Glock 17 is going to be the most-recommended firearm.

What do you want to do with it? Conceal carry? Range gun? Home defense?

well yea, if you're gonna use it HD then you MUST practice, practice, practice.

Glock 17 is a very solid HD sidearm. However, you might also consider a 12ga if you're gonna use it primarily for HD.

I like my glock 19, it was about 500 even if I remember right. I don't use it for HD though

Glock, XD, M&P, used Sigs, lower end 1911s...there are plenty of guns in your range, you need to go out and rent.

I would strongly recommend a Glock as a first firearm. The 17 is a great choice for target shooting and home-defense. If you are interested in getting a concealed carry permit, the 19 might be a better option. My reasoning for recommending Glock is that they are simple, easy to maintain, extremely reliable (if not the most reliable handgun available), combat-proven, and you can do anything with them. The amount of replacement parts available for Glocks are astounding, many simply drop in or are easily installed with minimal effort. Spare parts are cheap as hell.

Glock + night sights FTW. If for home defense, slap a flashlight on the rail if that's your cup of tea.
