So I went out and got the XTi :bigthumb:. It's superb in terms of noise and stuff, but pictures look a little soft to me at 100%... Could it be because of the kit lens, or the camera itself (cause I've read from a couple of people that they've gotten defective ones and brought it back)? Are defects common in these cameras? Some sample images cropped 100%: How do they look?

in the case of the first picture...shooting at the lenses extreme wideness at a slow shutter speed with a high iso isnt going to get you the sharpest of pictures :dunno:

    1. Shooting at 1/20 sec (as in first pic) will likely show motion blur.
    2. Shooting at ISO800 will cause the camera to use more agressive noise reduction, which also reduces sharpness.
    3. 100% crops of an image shot with the kit lens will be soft. The kit lens is cheap for a reason.
    4. Canon DSLR's don't apply much sharpening in the camera, you need to do that in post (photoshop USM)

Your camera is not broken but if you think it is, I'll give you $50 for it.

Spend $60 on a 50 1.8, learn to correctly use your settings and you'll see some sharp pictures.

Kit lens at 7.1 should be somewhat sharp.

17-40 wide open is nothing to brag about...

To the thread stater- not all shots have to be sharp, some even benefit from softness...just have fun.
