    Hi Guys,

This has got me completely stumped. I've got a brand new, fresh install of Windows XP Professional SP2 with all updates to date. Straight away as soon as a user logs in, winlogon.exe crashes and the user is logged out. The exact error message that is presented is:

    Code:
[B]winlogon.exe has encountered a problem and needed to close.[/B]

    [I]<general MS error spiel>[/I]

I've scanned for virii and spyware just to rule them out. Other then that, I've got no idea!

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Cheers,
    Jason

    not legit XP disc/license?

Likely the cause of a hacked file. winlogon handles verification of license authenticity.

Does it keep running after winlogon.exe terminates? Because if it does, then it's probably a malware program masquerading as winlogon.exe -- the real one will cause an instant reboot if it crashes.

I had that at work....it was a corrupt install of the software we use to read smart cards.

I've seen that at work once. A Windows repair fixed it, but messed up everything else. I formatted the machine the next day. No clue what caused it...
