i'm trying to install service pack 1 (one) on this new install of windows. during the performing inventory phase, i get an error that reads: "The file C:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys is open or in use by another application. please close all windows....yada yada" thing is this, i have no other windows open but the windows update IE page. if i try to close that page, it'll cancel the update. anyone else here have a similar problem in the past? all help is appreciated.

    -thank you.

try downloading the network install version of sp1. should be about 130mb and will install from the desktop without any other programs needing to be open.

If you ever plan to update to SP2, you might as well go and download the network install of that which will include all the updates from SP1 as well.

Kind of weird since atapi is used to control CD drives, zip drives, that kind of thing. If the network install doesn't work, try disabling any of those devices before running, or if possible, run in safe mode.

It might also be in your config.sys as well - there shouldn't really be a good reason for XP to ever need it, it's a crutch for DOS platforms.

F5 should get you into same mode. If that doesn't work, make a slipstream CD with SP2 included. Then do an upgrade, from the CD. All your software & settings, should be fine, but be sure you have any 3rd party drives close by, just in case.

EDIT: If you are forced to do an upgrade. Be sure that you have a 100% legal CD Key or you'll have a big surprise once you reboot from the upgrade.

    Umm, it's F8, not F5.

    :uh:

    You are correct.

For those of you who don't know, F5 will refresh your screen or browser (Windows). F8, when used during computer start up, will start your computer in Safe Mode (also windows & some versions of Linux).

Daemon tools - unistall it if you have. Any software that has anything to do with your CDROM and DVD drive, uninstall it

Was thinking this was the problem too. Daemon locks the atapi.sys.

You probably just have to wait until the BIOS loads, but before XP starts loading.
