Say I have two machines sitting next to each other, both running xp pro. One was installed using an upgrade cd and the other was installed using a full installation cd. How would you tell the difference between the two?

Only if it was installed as an upgrade. You can use an upgrade CD to do a clean install as long as you have a copy of an older version.

Then it's not an upgrade, is it? It's a clean install. I don't care what the label on the CD says, I care what the contents on the hard drive are.

I'd say take a look at the CD-Keys that were used.

I'd think look at the 'upgraded' machine and check the creation dates of some of the Program Files and see when they were made. The Full Install XP box would be obvious then in a side-by-side comparision.

The question the original poster asked was upgrade CD vs. full version CD, so your post is irrelevant.
