    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought at one point my Icons on my desktop had a transparent background (i.e. the text name of the icon was there but no "color" background, so it was just like text over whatever desktop image i had) Now, its got a color background, so if i have a solid image it doesn't look right... how can i fix this?

    Control Panel->System->Advanced tab
    Performance->Settings button
    "Use drop shadow for icon labels on the desktop" = checked

    If that doesn't work:
    Right-click on your desktop->Arrange Icons->Lock Web Items On Desktop = unchecked
