I can't figure out what the issue might be, but anytime I got to open ANYTHING XP just hangs (on my laptop). I went to open an image before, and the hourglass came up, and nothing opened, I couldn't open the task manager, or shut down the computer.

I recently installed a new HD, could it be faulty? I also think a fan on my laptop is dead.

Not sure if it matters, but its a Dell Inspirion 700m.

stupid question, but have you rebooted? try disabling your virus scan temporarily? Those real-time scan engines sometimes hang.

I should add some more info cloned my original HD onto the new 80GB. XP was hanging a lot, so I installed XP fresh...erased everything from the HD.

I went through the Dell Resource CD, and I THOUGHT I reinstalled the chipset drivers.

Everything hangs... trying to change Desktop properties, opening resource CDs, etc etc... I'm about to try and install XP one last time and see what happens.

The Dell Resource CD is basically manually downloading them off the CD. You're telling me it would be smarter to just install them off Dell's support page?

even smarter to google the new drivers from the manufacturer... such as the latest and greatest Intel INF driver.
