I'm looking to buy a newer Jeep, either an XJ or YJ, and am having trouble deciding.

Either will be 4wd, 4.0L, and hopefully 5spd manual

    Pro YJ:
    Topless
    Classic Jeep Style
    Full Frame

    Con YJ:
    Overpriced in So Cal
Lower output due to restrictive exhaust
Not much room, forget about 3 passengers plus gear
    Forget about towing

    Pro XJ:
    Cheap Cheap Cheap!
Lots of Room for passengers and gear
    Can tow a trailer
Could sleep in it when out wheeling
    More civilized
    Jeepspeed

    Con XJ:
    It has a roof
Unibody (can't cut the top off without compromising structure

The XJ is probably a smarter move... but I keep going back to wanting the convertible Jeeps.

What would you pick for a off road toy.

Coming into summer it'd be damn hard to say no to a removable top and doors...

You could get away with racks over the spare tire, or hitch-racks for stuff you want to leave at base-camp, or if you really want to go all out with the sleeping thing get an M416 style trailer and bolt a roof-top-tent over the trailer. Cheap and tons of room for fuel, extra water, generator, water pump for shower, portable fridge, you're only limited by your budget and imagination. Hugely depends on whether a trailer is suitable to your terrain though.

You can sleep in a Wrangler - but it's not comfortable AT ALL.
