Saw this on another gun forum.....

Guy on our squad at Rio Salado from the Dillon Precision crew. Super cool guy, had a blast all weekend. Then the last stage of the entire weekend. this happened. Best we can tell it fired out of battery. He is OK.

In a nutshell, the gun went bang before the slide was all of the way forward, so not all of the energy was focused on a) propelling the bullet out of the barrel and b) pushing the slide backwards. The exploding charge went "freedom!" and found that the path of least resistance was elsewhere. Which was bad on the good/bad scale.

Wow, I have never seen that before, how much did it affect the operator right after?

Actually, I really like the new XD-M series. Good trigger and shoots very nice.

You can see bruising on his left hand, I would have expected worse.

That is damn amazing. I was defiantly thinking he was going to get a lot worse than some bruising.

    forgot to put that quote...

"Looks like reloaded .40 cal. It appears the bolt/breech face was not all the way forward leaving the case unsupported."

Yeah there could have been several factors on that one.

The XDM has a disconnector that would not allow the striker to ignite unless there were more to it than a DOB.

"If" that is the bullet that's lodged in that barrel, I see a crack that would indicate a case rupture/failure.

my guess is he didn't fully size his brass and he reloaded into a weak/failed brass.

This is why I tell people that reloading .40 is tricky. I use a "U" die to fully size my brass.

This is just my quick/initial assessment anyhow. Wasn't there, didn't see it happen.

If the gun fired out of battery it would not matter what ammo was used, factory or reloads. While a stock XD has features that would help prevent the pistol from firing out of battery, some trigger jobs can defeat these features. Who knows if this pistol has been thus modified.

I shoot with a girl named Flora that was the XD chick. She had a XD trigger job done by a very well know smith Dave Lawver of DMW and her striker followed causing a ND at the LAMR at spring steel at rio salado. DQ'ed for the match.

I'm not framilar with the XD design as I only shoot glocks but all sorts of things can cause a gun to fire out of battery. A weak recoil spring for example. I was shooting a worn out 11 lbs ismi spring and it caused the gun to kB several times. Gave me a good wack in the web of my hand, blew the mag and extractor out of the gun, and I shit my pants. No damage to the gun because it's a glock. Might of blown up a lesser gun. Of course not being very smart I kB'ed several more times before I figured out it was the spring and not the brass.

While a fat round could cause the gun not to go into battery, there needs to be other things that cause the gun fire out of battery. such as the disconnector being defeated or a weak recoil spring allowing the gun to unlock early.

Yar, this is a bit OT, but at about what round count would you recommend replacing parts on a Glock, and which ones? I assume you don't shoot many stock parts but I'm sure you have a better idea than I do. Mine round count is getting up there and it's about 15 years old.

My recomendation on any defensive gun or competition gun that you replace every spring in the gun once a year regardless of round count. This includes magazine springs.

On a glock I would also replace spring cups, and trigger pin once a year.

This is probably excessive but for me not worth betting my life or my ego on.

In the glock I have broken trigger pins and the gun still ran with the trigger pin broken in half. I've broken several trigger springs (factory) and the gun still fires but it like a 8lbs pull. I have yet to break a GW trigger spring but to be honest I change them out often. I've broken the wire nubbin on the slide release which can cause the slide to intermitently lock back. I figured it out quick when I depressed the lever and it felt funny. I shot the rest of the stage with my thumb over the lever and it was a non issue. I've broken prototype skeletonized strikers on purpose which did not receive a heat treat. Gun still works with a broken striker though it's real slow and you definately know something is wrong. Broke off a frame rail and the gun still shoots with 3 rails. In fact I shot it with 3 rails until Glock got me a replacement frame. This was back during the frame recall in early 2000

Please tell me you have this video up somewhere. I've got this visual in my head of you walking away from the stage after shitting yourself and I wanna see how close to reality my imagination is.
