Xbox 360 to allow USB drives for Game Storage in 2010 *UPDATE* up to 16GB

    http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/18/xbox-360-gaining-usb-storage-support-in-2010-update/

Documentation obtained by Joystiq – and subsequently confirmed with two separate sources – reveals that "USB Mass Storage Device Support on Xbox 360" will soon be a reality. The document, authored by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft, states that due to "increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices, a 2010 Xbox 360 system update" will allow consumers to save and load game data from USB devices. The update is purportedly coming in Spring 2010.

Once the update occurs, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC and Title Updates to the storage device. "USB storage devices may, however, have far greater memory capacity than MUs (at the date of writing, the largest MU is 512 MB), and may therefore support previously infeasible operations-such as installation of a full disc-based title." That's right, you can also store disc-based games to the USB device; however, it will require the disc to be in the tray for authentication, identical to the current functionality.

    cont....

pretty sweet. Probably due to them getting flac about the drive prices, and also because of the supposed "360 lite" which seems to have an internal non-removeable drive.

Hmm that goes along way to confirming the possibility of thise Lite version.

Also lets them worry less about Arcade owners.

Sucks for people that spent £100 or so on the bigger HDDs though.

Or this could be an early April Fools.

No, you can use what you want but you can only store 16GB.

Who needs that much room anyway? I have a 120GB HDD and never felt like I needed more.

I guess maybe if you install every game, but that's a waste of space for games you hardly play.

You guys do realize there is a 16 gb limitation on those USB drives?
You can get around that by having 2 for a total of 32 gb. But the 360 won't allow 3 (so the answer is 'no' to hubs).

Where did you see 16GB limit?

Quote in first post mentions 'high capacity' 16GB is not high capacity when it is smaller than the smallest HDD they've ever added.

sure, but that 250 would retail for about $200. As opposed to a passport 500GB USB drive for $99.

Useful if you want to keep all your media on that drive too.

i paid $100 on ebay, pulled from a new mw2 console. yea the 500gb is ideal, but i'd rather not use an external, had them crap out on me before, would rather not take the chance with my xbox info being lost on it.

any drive can die. your 360 drive can die too.

I'm just saying it'll cost much less at retail and you'll have options. You didn't buy yours retail so you're not a good test case.

    :sad2:

Well at least it does away with the stupid Memory Units but it's still worthless for installing games and such.

    wtf 16GB limit :ugh2:

It's not so much a big deal for the usage itself.

It does however signal a move in the right direction for console manufacturers. I'm hoping the trend continues.

The 360 already blows away the PS3 in terms of data portability. I hope this lights a fire under Sony's ass to look into the issue more thoroughly.

why even bother? Good job Microshit in waiting for the expiration of the consoles life to do it. PS3 allowed ext USB support right from day one.

    PS3 ftw.

I already have an 120GB anyways and the only game I play on my xbox is the exclusives so...

They have some data backup or transfer thing that's pretty ass backwards.

I'm not sure if you can move a drive from one unit to another but I doubt it. Even if you could, that's a pain in the ass to have to do.

Lol, fail. There is not even a reason to make shit up because the way MS is implementing it is stupid enough.

It's a huge step up from paying an absurd amount for those shitty 512mb memory cards. I'm sure the only reason they are making that cap is because they still want people to buy their overpriced 20gb hard drives

I don't even think they make the 20gb drive anymore and you end up with around 14gb free with system partition on it anyway so this ends up being more. What they're doing is getting out of the memory unit business. This makes sense as the next xbox revision probably won't have custom MU ports.

This is great for cheap save/profile portability. Installed games are tied to hardware so 16gb isn't so useful in that regard but for arcade owners and people running out of space this could be OK for them.

Still a slap in the face when you consider that the only real reason there is an arbitrary cap is because they don't want to hurt their thriving peripheral business
