Started cutting down today. Have heard horror stories about the w/d symptoms. Hoping I can make it thru...

    I love Xanax :yum:

I never took it more than once a month though...it sort of defeats the purpose since you build up the tolerance to it.

Sorry, I hope I'm not going against the protocol of this subforum; I've never been here before, I just saw "Xanax" on the main page and it brought back fuzzy memories.

Xanax made me real crabby. I stopped taking it. I never really noticed any w/d symptoms except I stopped being a bitch.

The withdrawal from Xanax sucks ass... I stopped taking it and cut down so quickly that the withdrawals were so bad that they actually put me back ON Xanax at a higher dosage. I take 1MG a day when I had only started out taking .25mg a day.. it gets addictive after so many months of use and you develop a toleranace to it so you need more and more to feel the same effects.

Now they are trying to get me off Xanax again so they put me on a high dosage of SSRI's hoping that they will help (example of SSRI's is Prozac, Paxil, etc). The SSRI's arent addictive and you don't develop a tolerance like you do with Xanax.

I've heard of people quitting Xanax cold-turkey and ending up right in the emergency room, some compared it to being worse than heroin withdrawals. It all depends on how much you are taking too. How much have you been taking a day and are you prescribed it?

I would suggest quitting alltogether. If you begin experiencing extreme withdrawl, check yourself into the local detox clinic. If you feel like you are a drug addict (by the definition of AA/NA which is in the stickies), try attending a Narcotics Anonymous meeting.

If you aren't a drug addict, that's fine. You are allowed to love drugs if that's what you feel, however we don't promote drug usuage around here. You seem to be able to moderate, the people in this forum are unable to do that, and find that complete abstinence is the only solution for them.

The withdrawl from benzos (Xanax is a benzo) can oftentimes be worse than heroine withdrawl. Many people find it necessary to check themselves into a local detox clinic, or they are forced to go there by the courts. Many people also find it necessary to attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings to avoid relapse and find a new way of life.

Moderating drug usage for those who were willing to abuse at one point is generally a pretty hard thing to do. Nevertheless, if you can moderate, kudos. If you can't, then you should seek some help.

good question. If its a prescription, perhaps you should talk to your doctor.

One of my clients (I'm a social worker) was on xanax and decided to take himself off. I have never seen him acting like that before. He was hallucinating, couldn't remember stuff, etc. I ended up at the mental health emergency room with him after he held a gun to his head and said he was going to kill himself. He decided to take himself off after he heard it was addictive. Eventually we got him straightened out and his doctor just told him to contiune taking it but he is 87 years old so there is no sense in someone his age trying to detox.

I was taking 3 mg a day. Now I'm down to 1.5 mg a day. Yes, it is prescribed. Yes, it's like herion withdrawal. And yes, withdrawal from it sucks ass. BIG ass :wtc: If you go off it cold turkey you can hallucinate and have seizures. :squint:

Try switching to Diazepam (Valium) See Your Doctor firsrt, at the equivalent dose to Xanax, then slowly withdrawl from the Valium.

Valium has a long half life (it stays in your system longer)
Xanax has a short Half life, giving you withdrawl symptoms very quickly if you miss a dose

Search the web on ho to do this, Look for the articles by Prof. Heather Ashton it explains every aspect of Benzo withdrawl

    Good Luck
    Stick with it

Dave 6 years on Valium at 50mg now (Shit)

I feel the same way about some of the drugs my docs have given me. I have had worse shit prescribed that was harder to come off of than any street drug. Often times, doctors of western medicine are just corporate dope pushers it is so lame.

That stuff's freaking horrible. People do crazy shit on it, violent, fucked up shit and they for some reason get the idea that they can get away with whatever they're doing. Im glad one of my good friends quit messing around with it, before he went too far with the shit he did while on it.

Wow! I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking I should have got up and ran when he prescribed it for me. I'm sorry some of you are still on it. :wtc: I wish I'd known. I'm still on 1.25 right now. I've had some ups and downs in my personal life so I'm maintaining right now. Hopefully, next week I'll try to cut down again. Thanks for the support. :)

I have a friend that is controlled by xanax for the rest of his life probably.

recently... someone i knew actually DIED from doing it heavily every day, then just stopping.

These are the quaaludes of the 21st century.

yes, in heavy, daily users this can happen.. which is why it is suggested to slowly wean off it (the Ashtons manual says to do it over 14 weeks to avoid problems and tells you how to taper over the 14 weeks or so)
