Divx said that the file was corrupt and could not be played. so then i tried copying the file back onto my computers hd. and i got this message:

    get info on the file (file > get info);

    check the file size is about right, then down the bottom under ownership & permissions > details check that its set to your username and read+write.

    Other than that, it could be to do with weird file names, what is the hard drive formatted as? fat?

    this does not appear to be the problem, but do this anyway.

    see if you can rename the file to something short, i doubt this is it but I have had a similar error but usually only with network drives on other operating systems.

    i like vlc for playing everything under the sun... and how it has much better volume than WMP. However, the interface blows chunks. Also seeking is absolutely useless in VLC because it takes 10 seconds for the video to become un-distorted.

    Have you tried repair permissions in disk utility? Also try repair disk...

    Might not help, but it couldn't hurt to try.
