I just formatted my computer and when I went to update windows xp, I get this message...This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation. The product key found on this computer is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked.

If it's a legit copy, then contact Microsoft. What they'll do is walk you through a key change on the phone.

Windows 2k doesn't have Microsoft Advantage iirc. It's the best Windows release ever anyhow from what I've seen. Might be worth giving it a shot.

does it really stop you from doing anything? i remember reading that even having a pirated copy of winxp will still let you install critical updates

it's not stopping you from booting up right?

Ahem, although I have no personal experience with pirated copies of Windows, I have been told that after Windows XP is installed, and then one tries to do the first update, if one looks for the Windows Validation Tool and unchecks it and then tells Update not to notify him/her about that update any longer, then this type of thing does not become a problem. However, you will not be able to use Internet Explorer 7. All the other updates are completely available. Also, the warning that comes up during startup can be suppressed.
Again, I have no personal knowledge of this, it is just what I have been told. :)

Turn on Automatic Updates and let it download updates for you. Microsoft, while greedy, isn't stupid enough to let the many thousands of bastard users stay un-patched and become breeding grounds for the latest viruses that can assault legitimate users' machines. It's all about preventing critical mass without letting the bastard users have all the fun toys as well.

IE7 and Windows Media Player 11 both require validation.

WMP11 looks pretty but offers little in the way of new features, and IE7 is a worthless piece of garbage, so those aren't big motivations. Mostly there's the issue of new .NET Frameworks and other such things that you won't be able to download without a legitimate copy of Windows.

If Microsoft wiped out every copy of illegal Windows on the face of the planet, they might make some short gains, but in the long run they'd lose out.

Windows is too expensive, and many people will move on to other platforms like Linux, which means fewer sales of anything on the Windows platform. A less robust Windows software environment means fewer Windows sales, and more off-Windows development.

It's like cereal at the grocery store. Shelf space is limited. General Mills wants your grocer to stock its 350 varieties of cereal even if only 30 sell on a regular basis because that's money that's NOT going to whoever else.

Will it kill Microsoft? I don't see that happening for many years, until there is some hella sweet productivity, development, and gaming software for Linux and Mac to rival Windows.

He's gotten pretty thoroughly owned already. All the advice he's gotten has been to 1) buy a legitimate copy or 2) take a handout from Microsoft using Automatic Updates. There's nothing in there about circumventing any security measures.

    Well said Supergeek.
Why don't they allow manual update so? I think it surely is a compromise on internet security. Makes sense knowing Microsoft.
