    I get this:

    The 'open with' thing

The same when I right click -> explore

And when I choose Internet explorer as the program, it works, but it opens it up in a new window. It's kind of a hassle. This started happening after I did some virus scans and removed some infected files, I must have disabled some process or something (no way of knowing - I didn't realize this until a while later)

    What should I try?

That's really weird. Open with shouldn't even be an option in there.

You got your windows disc? Go to start > run > and type in sfc /scannow
and drop the windows disc in the drive and let it do a scan. Any dll files that were messed with during the virus scans will get repaired.

open My computer > tools > folder options > file types tab > Drive should be "NONE"

also check if there is autorun.inf in the root drive, note that it may be a hidden file
delete it or put it somewhere else, reboot

Right click on C:\ and choose explore. If there is a "c:\autorun.inf" file delete it. Make sure "show hidden files" is on before you do this (In windows explorer it is under tools->folder options->view.

What happens when you type c:\ in start->run or in the address bar?

    It works :eek4:

But it still doesn't work when I double click my computer

I removed a file called autorun.PNF (not INF) and reboot but still nothing

I tried to do that sfc \scannow but it turns out I have home edition installed and the only Windows CD I have is professional so it wouldn't let me replace the dll's

    Check for it again.

There might be an autorun on another drive or something in your startup recreating the file.

    You want something devious?

Take a screenshot of someones desktop, as is, with the icons and the taskbar and everything... Then, set it as their wallpaper... Then, remove all of their icons, lock the taskbar in the down position and move it to the top of the screen, and watch the hilarity when they try to use the computer.

I had that happen before, it was some sort of spyware that hooked into winlogon. It would do it when I tried to open folders on my desktop but the start run would work fine.

There is an autorun in the root drive that would not show anywhere unless I type it in run or address bar. When I remove what is in it and try to save it, it either says read only or doesn't exist.

I also just realized that it when try to choose show hidden files in folder options, and click apply or ok, it doesn't change. When I click folder options again after I change it, it stays at do not show hidden files. AVG doesn't see any threat, I'll try to see if I can get another Antivirus program, maybe TrendMicro

you most definitely have a problem with spyware/adware and/or a virus. I've got a computer at the house with the same problem - only worse. I finally got it to boot up and open files - but I'm still not done with it. You need to get something that can access the NTFS drive in DOS mode and scan everything. I'd never seen a problem like this before this damn PC.

I was able to over-write the autorun.inf and removed what was in it. It works fine now, I did this in two computers. The first I used notepad++ to save another autorun2.inf, then somehow autorun.inf stopped being hidden. So I unchecked the 'read only' check box and was able to remove the text. In my other computer, it wouldn't work. I had to go in into safe mode, make a another empty autorun.inf in another directory and then paste it to overwrite it in the root drives. It wouldn't overwrite in command, and it wouldn't delete or rename, but it worked the other way.
