Pathetic. I deserve every one of the flames I get for these disgraceful times. I don't care that I have never drag raced my car before, I was honestly hoping for better and every one of us that went on Wednesday came away majorly disappointed. :(

    First run:

My best for the night (ran alone):

I don't want to make excuses, but I don't know what we were doing wrong. Dan's 305 HP Stickley M3/4 with a 3.46 differential ran a best of 14.3, Tony's Dinan Supercharged 300 whp E36 M3 ran a best of 14.3, Leo, who has run in the thirteens in the past with his worked 95 M3, was also low 14's...all I can say is wow.

And then there's Chris, with his E46 M3 timeslip (on left). Chris knows how to launch his car, is a road course junkie, and this was his best. Most of the time he was right with us in the low 14's :sad2: :

The thing I don't understand is that my trap speeds were pretty consistent, always at or around 96.x mph....that's a STOCK M3 TRAP SPEED!!! And spite of every trick I tried, I could not get a good launch! I suck! Hell, I didn't even care about my reaction time, all I wanted was a lower 60 foot! And I couldn't get lower than a damn 2.1!!!

    Things I did:

Lowered tire pressure in the rear to 25 psi
    Took out spare

    Things I didn't do

Didn't raise my rear coilover setting up to highest setting as directed by Dave. My launches were one of two things, I either spun and went nowhere, or had so much damn wheel hop that I thought the damn diff bolt was going to pop out at some point.

    Wow, that is dissapointing :(

I mean, shit, I ran my old GTI [email protected] with an intake and exhaust. You should have kicked the shit out of those times. Something does seem to be awry.

Yup! But since I am not one for excuses, I will stick with I Suck. :big grin:

And I hate to admit it, but I could not have had more fucking fun! Awesome time! In spite of being clowned by everything I lined up against!

The track could be to blame for those high ET's / low trap speeds.

Our local track is complete junk, mainly b/c its never prepped properly. The track officials say 1/4 mile times will drop ~ 0.7sec with a well prepped track. :hs:

RT has no affect on your times. You can sit there for 10secs and still hit the same time if you went at .500 (perfect RT)
from the looks of it everyone was hitting around the same times. so I don't think it's your driving skill. 14.3 seems just a lil above the average previous gen M3, but the trap seems low.
what were the track conditions? temp altitude, etc.

High 70's, and the track was reportedly very, very slick with no prep whatsoever. I am a bit freaked by the times, though, as I have seen stock E36 M3s run 13.8/13.9 at this same track and with much higher trap speeds. My M3 is too far from stock at this point to drop those numbers - Time for a tuneup, I guess. :dunno:

14.4 isn't so bad. It's not the E46 is it?

You're probably not getting the traction you need at launch.

How high did you keep the rev's before you dumped it?

Your times don't seem bad at all. I run 12's when I'm driving my best but it's hard to always do everything right. I wouldn't be upset with your times at all. Now those other guys are a different story...

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

As feared, I had the car inspected and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I am just going to chalk it up to "first time jitters" and leave it at that. :sad2:

Unrecognized: It's the older E36 M3, but I have it modified to the point where it can stay right with an E46 M3 to the 100 mph mark. This is why my trap speeds were a bit unsettling, as I thought - which shows I know jack shit when it comes to drag racing - that my traps would be at or around 100 mph. I guess it's just not to be. :dunno: I fiddled around with launch RPM, my best was right at 3500 RPM with a good amount of clutch slip to keep the revs up. This wheel hopped me out of the hole better than anything else I tried that night.

Ryuhei: Thanks man. In their defense, it was the first time for everyone that night, so we were all in the same novice boat. Plus every single one of us are dropped almost to the fullest on aggressive coilover setups, which made an effective launch impossible - it was either wheel hop city, or sit and spin. I think I am going to jack my rear up to its fullest before I return, so that I have more suspension compression on the launch. I don't know if it will help me run, but I am going to try it anyway - that and I am not going back until it's at or around 50 degrees. :big grin:

Capone28: What can I say, CMT= teh suckness at the drags.

dude, if u dont wana make excuses for urself then ill make one for u. There had to be something wrong with the track. How the hell can a supercharged m3 and a turbo 325is only be doing 14's. even an e46 m3. somethings just seems sketchy. Also my friend has a supercharged Grand prix. Im assuming that red one was supercharged the one that raced the turbo 325. my friends car is so fast hes beaten so many different cars. Hasent lost to anything yet. I know his car can do 13's. Even the Evo8 was doin 14's. thats bs man...

i know im bringing this back from the dead...but i rarely check in ot b/c my computer is slow as fuck...but now i got a new computer.

anyways, your timeslips seem dead on w/ your 60 and short times. even the trap speeds for times is consistent w/ cars running same speeds.

look at your 1st slip, then ur second. rule of thumb is that wahtever you shave off in the 60 foot, multiply it by 2 and thats wehat you should shave in the 1/4. that did hold true, as u got 2.4 at 14.95 and then a 2.1 @14.37... u shaved roughly .3 off the launch--and stretched it into .6 overall.

your 14.3 run at 96 is pretty damn good for not much track time. However, it may not seem good considering mods done, money spent, etc... A better question you should be asking yourself is- is my car tuned properly? Also have to take into consideration hp to weight ratio, driving style, etc. Shift gears hard? or ease gears and let boost drop off? Personally- i flat shift my car- my foot never comes off the gas pedal-- get to 7500 and i push clutch in shift as fast as i can while never dropping off throttle.

also, how are u launching? riding clutch out? dropping it and going? u need more track time to figure out a good setting. i personally take car up to 3500 and ride clutch feathering it until i feel tires grip. on slicks i take it to 7k and drop it.

seat time will help you drop your times lower. this is something that takes practice and tons of seat time to get down to a science. Also keep in mind- that when u hook, ur trap speed is lower...however, if u blow tires off at teh line, trap speeds are higher.

vw16 - That's some cool advice, I will bear it in mind when the track opens next season and it's time for some more "experimenting." :)

I experimented several times with different launches, and the one that yielded the lowest times was slipping at 3000 with a lot of wheel hop. Enough to shake the glove box open, and spill everthing out onto the seat and floor of the car. The next time, with the glovebox locked, all of the papers I had forgotten that I had stuffed up under my sun visor came flinging out into my face. heh. Another lesson learned.

AMG: Yep. I'm not going to make any excuses. I suck. :dunno:

I said it before, I will say it again - Of course the M3 is no drag car, but it was a whole ton of fun regardless. Even the kid in the E46 M3, who kept getting stomped by an F-Body with "M3EATR" plates, had an awesome time. Fish out of water, definitely out of its element, but so what? Fun anyway. :bigthumb:

Your bmw is not out of it's element..it is all a matter of how u drive the car. Any car can go in a straight line...it is just a matter of how quick u can do it ;) I think my car is proof of that....

seat time is biggest important thing. I seen a kid w/ a turbo m3 at teh track. Car was nice, but he had no f-ing clue on how to drive or what his setup even was. I dont think he got lower than a 14.5... and he had an easy 20k into the motor w/ costs of labor, parts, dress up stuff, etc....
