I just ran make menuconfig, configured a basic system kernel, and then ran "time make -j2" the result:

    real 0m19.574s
    user 0m17.390s
    sys 0m1.800s

    wtf?

He closely resembles Bobo the clown.

Nighty-night! We shall continue this display of chivalry and dastardly verbal dueling tomorrow!

Norbo is a computer in the networks lab. He lives in their rack.

Was the kernel already compiled so all make had to do was check the timestamps or something? Otherwise, wtf.

it was for a new gentoo install... booted off of livecd, entire hdd was ntfs before. obviously i had to fdisk and I had created an ext3 / partition and copied my stage1 and portage... but it was otherwise clean.

    wtf?

okay, I setup grub, removed the livecd, and rebooted. The system comes up, and I'm currently emerging xfce4... So that kernel works...

    wtf?

 It has a Windows key. How is it a Mac keyboard? Did you swap in a MacBook keyboard and replace the Apple keys?

I wish. It's only a single core. I built the machine in January 2005. It was the best available, at the time. I'm refraining from an upgrade until I want to dish out the cash for the next MacBook Pro.

I liked WoW for a year or so, until it really started to bug me that my character couldn't actually do anything meaningful. Now I await Dark & Light, which should have a much more flexible crafting schema and player-controlled world events.

Why'd you run "make -j2" if you don't have dual core? Is it hyperthreaded or something?

It's clearly a mac keyboard. There is no windows key. It has the open-apple key:

because it's faster. I've compiled many a kernel before, and -j2 has always given me better performance on this machine. You have to remember that this only specifies how many threads to use. Compiling is very CPU intensive, but the CPU isn't always the bottleneck. By running two threads, it can work on something else when waiting for HDD/memory, or whatever else it needs.

No, that definitely looks like a Windows key.

EDIT: Doh. He meant the white keyboard in the background. Dammitall...
