So you net $100/month for Hardship Duty Pay if you are dodging bullets, eating sand, and wading through IEDs in Iraq and Afghanistan, but if you're enjoying all of the wonders that the great state of Alaska has to offer to both civilians and military alike, you get $150/month.

    what.the.fuck.over :ugh2:

True, but they don't get imminent-danger pay which is an additional $225, and for those deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan for longer than 12 months they receive an additional $200.

Have you ever tried to ship something to Alaska? Internet ordering for those folks is hell.

well yeah, but then again it's a combat zone. :hsugh:

I mean, good fucking grief - so you're stationed in Alaska. Whoopty-doo. Most people that are stationed there asked for it on their wish list or dream sheet or something similar. Hardship Duty Pay is supposed to be for when you have to live in sub-standard conditions. Like when you're sleeping in a tent and shitting in a porta-potty on a daily basis.

OoooOOOoohhh - Alaska soldiers have to sleep in the barracks and have to listen to the cold wind blowing outside! Let's give them more hardship duty pay than the slobs that have to sleep in tents and work in 130* weather! :noes: :greddy2:

Those are only for remote locations in Alaska. It doesn't include Wainwright or Richardson. These places in Alaska are truly remote and located way off the mainland on small little isolated islands where it costs like $10 for a gallon of milk. If they aren't on small little islands then they are hundreds of miles away from civilization or even a hospital. No cell phones out there either (which are actually possible to use even in Iraq). I think that qualifies for a little extra mula should you find yourself out there.

my understanding the extra dough in alaska has to do with the oil income of the state being a collective to its citizens . everyone in alaska gets a small share of the revenue that comes in from the pipeline .

Nope, that's something entirely different. I believe the requirement to be eligible for that is proof of residence for a year and proof that you intend to make it your state of residence for your entire life (i.e. own land/house). It has nothing to do with being in the military though some people do end up staying there after the military and can therefore claim the yearly stipend.

Correct. That has nothing to do with Hardship Duty Pay.

Compared to Hawaii, Alaska is a hardship.

Compared to Alaska, Baghdad is a hardship. They should at least have the numbers reversed. $150 for Iraq and $100 for Alaska.

I agree with the bastards getting paid more than those in the sandbox. But it's still away from civilization IMO :o

I was figuring out what my paycheck would look like when I deploy, and stumbled on the Alaska thing. It just struck me the wrong way. It still does.

Instead of dealing with 100 plus degree temps, those guys are dealing with 60 below zero temps, and are very isolated. Those are very small places, and woudn't have many comforts. You aren't very likely to be treated nicely by the natives either.

I'm sure if he were stationed there he would be singing a different tune. The DoD doesn't like to throw out money at people in this way, so I am sure there is a really good reason why they are receiving it.

I know the DoD likes to waste money, but how many of us see it wasted in this manner?

Speaking of those little islands, every year for AT we end up spending a month on one of them (usually annette island). They are pretty isolated, no way to get off of them, cell service is shitty, and having limited water supplies and very little power gets old quick. And this is just in the Inner Passage where it is all rainforests, I can imagine how horrible it would be to have to live on one of the islands way up north.
