I JUST got a new computer today and it came with McAfee Security Center. I have the McAfee PersonalFirewallPlus running and never really understood it. well I went into my "view firewall summary" and there are 131 blocked events. I check them and it says that a computer pinged me or attempted an unsolicited connection. they primarily are for Port 1026 and 1027. what the fuck is this and am I "being hacked" ? I went into my network places and windows "firewalled" both connections. what does all this stuff mean?

also, I goto "trace this event" and it shows me a map of the world and a green line going in several directions. some were straight line to Seoul (sorry, forgot country).

sorry I'm such a nub at this, but this is really freaking me out.

also, before "firewalling" my connections with the windows firewall, I cannot connect to ANY website it seems, and it was working fine earlier... What...the....fuck??

Unplug from the internet. Uninstall McAfee Security Center. Turn on the Windows Firewall. Plug back in to the internet.

You'll be fine. A ping is just a way to see if a computer exists at the other end of the connection; if your computer hasn't been answering those pings (which it very likely hasn't been) then the other computers don't even know your computer exists.

McAfee will expire anyway and be useless. Uninstall it like he suggested and just use the Windoze firewall. Download AVG from free.grisoft.com for antivirus and buy Spy Sweeper.

A very wise young man once told himself...

Connecting to the internet is like having sex with everybody on earth all at once; cover up as best you can and hope for the best.

All that matters is that it's blocking them.

When I say something seriously, you call it bullshit. When I say something that's obviously bullshit, you take it seriously. You should uncross those wires.

Indeed : I was saying that it is normal that you get a lot of intrusions. Only 5 % of those are really dangerous, and that is what the firewall is for.

If it's blocking them it's doing what it should. You have broadband. You will have intrusion attempts, nuff said.

Just take a look at your megahurtz. If they slowly start depleting, you are most likely getting hacked.

Without a firewall it takes only a few seconds on average for a Windows computer to be rootored when plugged directly to an internet connection. And their software firewall is not good enough. You should be using a firewall/router appliance that will put your PC on a Local Area Network with Network Address Translation. In other words: you can connect out, but the boogie men can't connect in.

I prefer a router but I know TONS of people who use only the XP firewall and don't know of a single one that's gotten a worm.
