    1. Guy leaves a note on my blog about how he wants to buy a poster print of my image.
    2. I told him what the price would be and he says ok he'll buy it
    3. Touched up the photo and enlarged it using genuine fractals, created a smugmug gallery special for him
    4. He added me on facebook today and I see this as his profile pic and read the convo

    :ugh:

    my opinion
    1. don't tell me to go to the trouble of touching it up and putting it in a gallery unless you're going to buy that shit for sure.

    2. $60 expensive? jesus fuck, the print costs like $35, leaving me with a damn lousy $25 profit. i was trying to help a fellow student and GT fan out.

tempted to tell him to fuck off and take it off my site :o

    /rant

UPDATE 11/11: sent him a message today to check in, check out the response :ugh:

i went the nice guy route and said "I think you should go for it. It would look great on your wall" - hopefully that pushes him. If not, I'll def go off on him.

    that is bullshit,
$60 bucks to own that shot?
    fuckin cheap dude

seriously why undersell yourself so badly?
that picture and the entire set that it belongs to is soo damn strong

picture should be in a magazine man, the background is so clean, the light behind adds to the shot, it is in sharp focus and the expression is awesome

tell him the price just went up to 600$ and you require a 300$ deposit immediately or you're going to photoshop cocks all over the pic

thats cheap as shit for an actual print.

I think these guys are under the impression that they're buying a poster, like from those douche bags that come to your college once a semester with all of the glow in the dark trippy mushroom posters and shit...

That's a whole world away from buying a shot directly from a photographer...

Maybe if you treat it that way, he'd get it a little bit more... Instead of having it shipped directly to him, have it come to you, sign it and mount it to some foam core or something...

gents i think he saved that picture and uploaded it. changing the link on your page/changing the image won't affect the fact he has that pic on his facebook

Don't undersell yourself again. Make it sting a little and people appreciate it more.

you should have billed him the $60 before doing work and then complaining about him complaining about your pricing.

He's not "owning" the image, its just a print...

you have to think of it from his point of view, he's not ordering a fine art piece. he thinks its a poster...

Exactly. he wants the football player to autograph it, fuck him - my autograph will be worth more

    yeah.. people suck.

pricing implies worth. For the uneducated, it's the only metric to use.

Next time, your prints start at $300 and go up. People will respond accordingly.

$60 would make even me think it's an overpriced poster, not an underpriced print.

These distinctions are clear to us, as photographers, but to the general public, they're usually not. It's just a picture. Print, poster, whatever, it's just a pic.

All he knows is that it's $60, and that's how he determines the level of want.
And proper pricing also discourages the people who say "yes" but really mean "I dunno...maybe...it was just an impulse thought"...

Chasing after this market is usually a waste of time.

admittedly, sure some people impulse buy $500+ items also, but why waste your time/energy on a loser who can't make up his mind on a $60 item.
At least make it worth your while.

this was the only level-headed response in the thread.

the attitude here is just wrong. you're dealing with someone that probably hasn't spent that kind of money on art before, and probably doesn't understand that you have to put up good money to get a good product. tell him how much other prints would cost, and how much of a deal you're giving him.

tell this guy to fuck off is just unnecessary, and you might even burn some bridges for future customers.

this is, of course, all coming from someone who hasn't sold any piece of work he's done. so take it for whatever it's worth.
