Crystal Reports is used in Cisco's Cummunications Manager IP Telephony solution. I don't know it's exact role, but I can run reports on phone calls and check the history and shit... :dunno:

It is a reporting tool that can take statistical data and present it in a uniform manner.

cisco uses it but it's not a cisco product... like jolly said, it's just a reporting package that (supposedly) makes it easier to organize and view data, and draw pretty pictures.

That's what we used it for as well ... tracking phone usage statistics

It's THE report writer. Just like Excel is the standard for spreadsheet work, Crystal Reports is the standard for report writing.

Why is it popular? Because it's really powerful but also really easy to use. They have also alligned themselves with a lot of major software manufacturers so that their engine is packaged into their products.

I don't know that I agree with that. I prefer IBM OnDemand.

Preference aside, it doesn't hold the market share like CR does.

In a nutshell, Crystal Reports sucks data out of a database and generates statistics and comparisons just like report tools built into databases do, except it also includes tools to make those statistics and comparisons look like you spent hours shuffling shit around in MSWord -- except you only have to shuffle shit around once and then use the template forever.

It's useful to analysts and people who sell stuff to analysts; if you don't fit into those categories, you'll probably never use it enough to appreciate it.

Crystal seems to be universally loved/hated. MS reporting services aint a bad option these days, depending on your needs.
