How strong are the 4L motors? What drivetrain combos should I look for? Which years are best?

I know nothing about them other than the part where I know I want one for a winter truck/summer off roader.

I like the boxed out body styling :o Any help bros? Or links to forums even?

-4.0 is as bullet proof as everyone says
    -98-99 are the best years
-4.0 with ax15 is the best drivetrain

ive owned two, both 4.0 with ax15 and off roaded the shit out of them

all they ever asked for was gas, oil, and more abuse

naxja.org is the best forum to learn about them, go, lurk, read the FAQ's, you'll learn alot.

The 4.0 is stout. 00-01 are what I would avoid. They had a bad head that is prone to cracking, there was a TSB for it but I believe its expired now. If you look at these years, ask the owner if they had the head replaced. 00-01 also have a low pinion Dana 30 front axle, which means bad pinion angles when you lift, plus a weak pinion gear.

Were I to buy one again I'd get a 95-96; old body style, dual diaphram booster, HO 4.0, new seat design (more upgrade options) driver airbag, no passenger. I'd get it without ABS, so I wouldn't have the Dana 35 rear (Chrysler 8.25 instead)

Auto vs manual is personal preference. The AW4 auto is rated higher for towing and is a trouble free trans; its made by Aisin-Warner, not Chrysler. Toyota uses a similar AW tranny. The AX15 is a good tranny (5spd), avoid earlier ones (89 and earlier) with the Pugeot BA-10 5spd, its a weak trans.

If you don't need full time 4wd I'd get one thats part time only, (NP231) as they have more upgrade options and are less prone to breakage.

Other things to look for are unibody cracks near the steering box, rusted out floorboards, motor mounts (easy to replace, just be ready for it)

Any more questions, let me know. My 94 is one of my favorite vehicles out of everything I've owned.

i have a 92 5spd that i bought new, and 2 98 autos that ive bought in the last 3yrs

motor lasts forever, 400,000 kms on my 92, 300,000kms on 98, and 200,000 on the other 98...no engine work, no loss of power

i run 5w30 dept store oil in all of them yr round, once a yr oil change

the aw4 auto is fucking bulletproof, they use it in supra turbos, only auto trans ive ever owned in any vehicle...a 5 spd will be hard to find

the valve covers will leak, fix that, the rear mains will leak, i dont bother, i add 1l a yr, the oil filter mount will leak, fix that, its just an o ring

between the 3, ive replaced 1 alt, 1 starter, 1 rear wiper motor, 1 drivers door window regulator, 1 blower motor, 1 blower motor resistor, 1 fuel tank and pump, 2 pair hatch struts, numerous pinion seals and couple tsfr case seals. ( didnt list u-joints, same with brakes...those arent repairs.)

i get 10l/100km mostly hwy in the 5spd, lil worse in the autos...all with 3" lift and 30 and 31 tires

the 97 and up is much nicer inside, but also considerable smaller inside...my 92 is way rusted out, im gonna go tejas and get another pre 97 to replace it when the underside finally gives in

i lifted my 92, i bought the 98's already lifted, got them cheaper that way and didnt have to waste a day doin it...i got the last 98 last aug, 150,000kms, 31" BFG AT/TA and 4.5" lift both less than 5000kms on them, stereo, alarm, tow hitch etc for $6000, which is high for the usa ot'ers but awesome for vcr, got it in langley...search the bc4x4.com for sale ads, its where i got mine.

    newest 98

30" tires fit inside the pre 97 perfectly, not so much the 97 and up

garrys wrecking in maple ridge, next to the albion ferry, is a jeep only wrecking yard, the parts source.

    my other 98

My parents had an old 85 with the 4 cylinder and 5 speed with 4x4. It took a car full of people and me being 13 to destroy the trans when they retired it. Lets just say getting stuck in the mud and having 5 people in it while reving it up and dropping the clutch doesn't work. I'd love to get another Cherokee but I'd probably go after the grand cherokee.

keep in mind BC cops are hardcore on the fender flares and mudflaps...so if you go crazy tires, you gotta get the flares and mudflaps, stick to 30 or 31s and no troubles..

whatever stock one you find, the rear springs will be shot, sagging and all.

its not that much moar to go 3" lift than replace stock height, so thats what everyone does.

although those are great deals i'm really looking for a 4door.

I've found one that I'm just waiting on a response from them with pictures.

It's a 2000 with 133,000km's...4L with 5spd...they're asking $4k for it so if it's in good shape and not a horrible color I might grab it :o

Mileage is cake as long as you gear it right, don't go crazy on the pedal, and keep it light (armor is heavy)

I drove mine to Moab, Ut from So Cal and was happy with the mileage I got.

You'll definitely get that. I can squeeze 20 on the highway with my 4.0. I probably get 12 around town and I beat the fuck out of it. I have a 2000, and had a '93. I LOVED the '93, it was my first car. Some guy ran a red light and the insurance totaled it. I was paid 2400 for it too, and got it for 750.

My next vehicle will probably be another xj.

I just picked up a 2001 Cherokee Sport with 75k Miles yesterday! Some of the older years were a bit more stout then the 2001 Model Year, but for me it is a good mixture of drivability (auto trans), Safety (ABS), Comfort and REAL off-road capability. Nothing beats solid axles.

We had a 89' that was a tank, we drove the shit out of that thing, 200k+ miles and we still turned around and sold it for $7k.

Find one that wasnt abused, give it a once over with all the maintenance things listed above, take care of it, and it will last you a LONG time!

Who the fuck paid 7,000 for a cherokee?! Haha was that in like 1990 or something? My first one was wheeled, but not abused and it was great. My current cherokee was abused and it's like a child who is healing from abuse. It is almost out of it though.
