I've been working on some stuff with some hombres lately and I am finding that www.writely.com is the bomb ass AJAX word processor for collaborating. Several people can edit a document at the same time. Its delayed by about 5 seconds, which is good enough. There is a kick ass revisioning system that shows what changed, and who done it. There is also the ability to export any file format you want, and you can easily publish your shit with the click of a button. It is absolutely the fucking bomb shits stuff that google is supposed to be doing only... its already here.

If you're working alone I'm sure word is fine, but if you're collaborating on something like a business plan or a software specification... then writely is the motherfucking shiznit, my whores. The shiznit.

I suggest you try it out. Signing up takes 10 seconds. I'm insanely pleased with writely. Only thing it doesn't do that I need is to import Excel tables, but thats kinda asking alot of a web app at the moment. And knowing how much these guys kick ass, I'm sure that will happen down the line.

No I don't work for writely. Its just kicking my ass all over the place.

Damn, it's been around for a year? (chuckles) It might as well run in DOS.

As did I. To test it. But recently I've been using it daily on a project, and it is absolutely wonderful. Ever done that?

Its .DOC export is pretty good, maintaining all the text formatting, but I had to manually resize my images. Not a big deal. The PDF export says it requires premium/$ subscription, but there is nowhere to subscribe.

I wonder if their business model is, "Do what everyone says google is doing, in order to be favorably aquired by google."

That really wouldnt be a bad way to do things. Sure, it may not be the best route, but if it pays off, it'd pay off big.

Writely does kick ass for certain things. I'd heard about it, but only just recently really used it when me and 3 others needed to come up with a mission statement for a project. Trouble us, we only ever see each other every few weeks. So we just Writley's the whole thing, and all 4 of us could log in whenever we had a moment, tweak and touch up, check what the other 3 had done, and in under a week, we had that doc down.

Beats the hell out of mailing listing a Word doc around between 4 people, and trying to keep track of the most recent version of the document.

As for Google buying writely, well...

We are the Google. Your data will be assimilated. Resistence is futile.
