The last half hour I must have tried 20 different domain names and none of them contained a developed website :wtf:

Trying to find a domain name for a website that will include live performances of bands playing in clubs in hollywood + footage of afterparty shit + probably some modeling, no porn though.

I want hollywoodrocks.com of course but am pretty sure they'll want a 5 or 6 digit number for it and I can use that kind of money on better shit. Planning on using about 50k - 60k on equipment (cameras and audio shit) and the first few months of server space and about 150 - 190k on marketing. Project won't even start till june 09 but I am starting to scour for domain names since I just got back from hollywood and am all gitty about it.....

I've found numerous domain names that I've wanted, so I've contacted every single person that owned the domain names and I've never received anything back.

hollywoodrocks.com is actually for sale by that pos squatter. I'm thinking about writing to them that my grandma has a rock or crystal health store in hollywood florida and I would like to put up a simple site for good ol' granny  maybe if I catch the right person they'll make me a reasonable price. if i were to write what it is really for they'd come over personally to anally violate me

I fuckin hate bitches that cry because they think they came up with a great name first and are pissed that someone registered it 10 years ago and renewed it the whole time. ;)

I agree about kiting and asses using the 5 day grace period to register/taste domains for traffic but that is different than those that invest in domains for either future use or future sale.

"squating" on probably 1k domains now and will probably have double that by the end of the year ;). You better hurry up and figure out your name now and register it or you can try to buy it from me later ;).

PS I fuckin hate that asshole that bought all that property in Los Angeles and then resold it for way more. It's not fair that I can't buy it now for what I want to pay regardless of the real value.

lol, I was mostly just giving you shit ;). I actually spent a couple minutes trying come up with a decent domain for you but got distracted then forgot about it lol. You can also try services like pickydomains.com which for $50 you get a bunch of name ideas for your needs from a bunch of different people and if you don't see one you like you get a refund. But with that many people trying to come up with ideas there is a good chance they might find something catchy that you like and makes it worth the $50.

Then again, there are a few people on here that like to try to come up with good names so you might find some you like.

And for what it's worth, I'd say 80% or so of the names I have registered over the years are ones I had at least some idea/plan on what I was going to develop it into...just never have that much time lol.

Teh Internetz != Real life Real Estate.

I just think it's funny that you're squatting on so many domain names in hopes of selling one BIG name, but in the end all you're left with is a bunch of words that you own on the internet until you either stop renewing or die, whichever comes first.

    :mamoru:

    p.s. I dislike squatters too. :o

You say they'll want 5 or 6 figures, might be an idea to test the water with an offer of say, $300 for one of the domains you want. You might be surprised. :)

but property is property right? You would be surprised about the similarities between domains and "real" real estate though.

And you can think it's funny all you want but that doesn't mean that good names are in fact running out and more and more people are getting online every day. There is a finite number of usable, meaning decent, names and if you think there will be more .coms and just wait then you will be stuck having to register a different TLD or something like adfjlasjdfsjdlfsdsd.com ;).

Although I am sure I will never have time to develop them all, I still don't consider myself a "squater" because I actually have plans for a large majority of them. Only a very small percentage were ones I grabbed with no intentions besides "hmmm, that one may be worth money one day".

But you can hate all you want...I have domains for all the sites I want already and don't have to stress trying to find any. And I'm still not one of those asshole kiters or grace period abusers which are assholes.

And oh yeah, my domains earn their own. They earn enough from parking to pay for themselves each year so not much sweat off my back ;). Having a ton of domains I like sit and pay for themselves until I have time to develop them > *

Yeah I wish it were illegal to squat on domains. It's a disgusting practice. I have found that many of the primary domain names I come up with are squatted on, selling for anywhere from 50-5000 dollars. Such bullshit.

What's next? Patents for things you haven't developed yet? Then when someone does develop it, they have to buy the patent rights from you?

Having a domain name 10 years old and keeping it for your site is one thing. Going and registering as many "common" words as domains as you can is another.

I wouldn't buy from you moron squatters no matter how good the name. You're all part of the group of scum that "ruins the internet" in so many different ways. The internet was started by intelligent people with a good purpose. Then fucking idiots like you decided to try to exploit it in ways that are damaging to the "spirit" of the internet.

Squatters: "I don't have any solid web ideas or development skills, so instead of taking the time and money to design a site that serves a purpose and can possibly bring in some revenue, I'll just buy a bunch of words in hopes of selling it later when someone else comes up with the idea and development. Why go through all that trouble, amirite?"
