My wife asked me if I was planning to wear it to my grandfather's funeral. I wasn't planning on it since I didn't want to draw any extra attention to myself at the funeral.

    What would you do?

    Yes.

I would be there in my dress whites with ribbons and medals.

Most of the attention you would probably receive is people thanking you for your service in the military.

do it asshole ... you both served ... its more honring him than bringing attention to yourself ... any thanks you get are thanks to him as well ... what more can you ask for ?

wear it even if you have to buy something to make it complete.

    Full service Dress FTW

you'll never have another chance to honor your grandpa in such a way; i'm sure he would be very pleased.

Yes, I wore my dress whites to my grandfather's, grandmother's, my father's and my mother-in-law's funerals. 2 were civilian funerals (Father/mother-in-law), my grandfather's and grandmaother's were mil funerals.

From everyone that I spoke to, they said it added to the civialian funerals having a uniformed officer there, at the mil funerals, I was 1 of only 3 or 4 people in uniform , the rest was family/civilian friends.

My mother cried (even more) at my father's funeral when she saw me in my dress whites as it was a total suprise I was there at all. The rest of my family was in awe since they hadn't seen me in dress whites before.

I had called my mother as soon as I heard from my sister (that my father had passed)to tell her I could not make it as I was due to deploy the next day... but the deployment got delayed for 2 weeks due to some mixed up orders on the morning of the funeral, so I got on a flight and flew 5 hours from Perth to Sydney in dress whites just to attend. Luckly my wife, being the florist that she is, got the address of the cemetary to send flowers..

I wouldn't. The funeral is for the the person, not me to draw attention.

the poll needs another option for "Depends on the situation".

I would not wear it to the funeral of someone that had nothing to do with the military or anything pertaining to my military life.
