For those with CHL. If you were in a situation where you or someone else was attacked by a dog, would you shoot the dog? At what point during the attack would u decide that it was time to pull your piece?

I ask because i was attacked by a dog last weekend at the dog park. It got me by the hand for a few seconds before the owner was able to get it off of me. The ER lady told me they had another attack earlier that day and the guy lost some fingers, so i consider myself lucky.

I'm not mentioning the breed of dog because i dont want this to turn into a dog debate. I just wonder what you would have done and what legal options you have.

For me it would all depend on the size of the dog, obviously you weren't bitten by a min pin. But if it was a big dog then I would seriously think about it shooting it.

I dont know what your dog park is like but in ours I bet you'd get sued by all the other owners for some kind of I was in mortal danger when he pulled out his gun to shoot the attacking dog type bs.

Id rather shoot an attacking human over an attacking dog any day. I heart doggies.

If i feared for my life absolutely i would have pulled on the dog, if he got your hand whats not to say he would have gone for your throat also

I have my 007 license and if I was attacked I would shoot it hands down, or if a family member or close friend walking with me was, i would, but I would not shoot a dog if I was walking down the street and saw someone (not close to me personally or I don't know) getting mauled :o b/c of liability

You should have killed it so they could test the brain for rabies

Did the owner pay for your medical expenses at least? At a dog park I would probably only shoot a dog as a last resort. Generally the owner is there, lot of other people to help.

If some dog comes out from the alley with no owner present and I was in threat of harm then it is something else entirely.

and if you care about your dog, don't take it to dog parks. They are dangerous.

In your situation with the owner present, it wouldn't be my first thought, but from how your hand looks, I definitely would have been thinking about it at that point.

At the very least I would pull my knife, but depending on the situation I wouldn't hesitate to shoot one either.

dot. doesn't matter what kind of dog it is. if someone can't control their dog and it attacks me or a loved one, as much as I love animals, it's going to be taken down.

my parents small dog (don't go there) was attacked by a black lab who was not on a leash. almost killed my parents dog. my father kicked the shit out of the thing (we dont have CCW here) and took the family to court, and all the due process. They still got a judgment for the huge cost of medical expenses to my parents dog. the family put the dog down after being threatened with a very large lawsuit as even after medical treatment, their dog was not in very good shape and has never been the same. my father said if he would have had a gun, he would have shot it instantly. and I agree

EDIT: didn't see that this was at a dog park. that's kinda a gray area I bet. I disagree with dog parks where people let dogs which are uncontrollable, run without a leash. but that's just me. The experience I spoke of above, was on a city street in a city that has a leash law.

Yes. I'm an animal lover, but any creature, human or not, is getting shot if they draw any blood from me. I'd hate to have to kill a dog, but if it'll attack me without provocation, its a danger to everyone else too.

    on the street? dead dog.

Ive heard too many horror stories of dog parks to take my dog there. dogs attacked by other dogs ending in expensive vet visits, attacks like the thread starter. I'll stay away.

i'm pretty sure you wouldn't get in any kind of trouble if you shot a dog attacking a complete stranger.
