I'm trying to decide to go with the White or Black. I really like the Black better, but I'm not sure if it's $150 better. :hsughno: That $150 could be used for more accessories (backpack, iLap, etc). Originally I was going to go with a MBP, but decided to step down to a MB and have some money left over for the new PowerMac replacement when it arrives.

    Would you pay it?

If it's anything like my black iPod nano -- no. The surface shows scratches WAAAAY too well. Look at it too hard and it will scratch.

Consider it an appearance upgrade... It's nothing new, just look to the automotive world.

just handled the MBs today, gotta say the black looks 100x better than the white. I would've been really tempted had I been buying. Also way easier to hide random wear and tear i.e. dirt and all that stuff. The MB is not glossy like the nano so scratching isn't the problem that it is with the nano.

im pretty happy with my black one. I really dont think the extra $200 is worth it, but mine was a present so i chose a black one with 2 gigs of memory.

Guess it depends on the maturity of the buyer. I would prefer that my laptop not stand out for a variety of reasons. One being its unnecessary and another being that it makes you a better target for theft.

But $150-200 for just a change in color is an awful lot.

the student discount between the mid-white and black is the same $100 off. so im going with the white.

all you get is 20gb more, and it looks somewhat better i suppose.

    1. The black reminds me of the old pismo/wallstreet/lombard line, not every other laptop on the market.
    2. One of the greatest things about the mac is no one really wants to steal it because they either don't know how to use it or don't have a buyer for it. Built-in anti-theft device!

And if you're already paying $1300 for a laptop, whats another $100? If you break it down, that increase doesn't really yield anything greater but the looks are well worth the money for me. I'd rather have a black, no-dirt showing keyboard than the white, constantly dirty keyboard.

Depends where you are, many view Macs as expensive and will steal them simply because of that fact. Particularly on any campus or location with a lot of Macs around.

As far as "what's another $100 when you're spending $1300," well it's another $100 and I can't say I'd needlessly throw that away for just a change in color when there's likely no justification in terms of materials for charging the additional $100. Some people are just willing to pay for it, I wouldn't be.

I will pay for added features of all sorts if they're useful though :) Hence why I have the laptop I have.

Isn't there an issue with the black MBs peeling?

I'm going to buy a MB for my fiancee's birthday. I'm going to decide which color to get when I see them at the Apple store, but the "peeling" stories are making me hesitant.

Well, there's no story behind that pic. It was taken at an Apple store so who knows what it's been through?

I didn't like the texture of the black when I felt it in the store. Plus I left fingerprints because my hands were warm.

Looks like the rubbery coating on the screen housing of most thinkpads. It can scratch and scuff easily but I've never seen it rub off that quickly.

It's a nice feel, but it is something that will wear.
