Computer insurance. I'm not sure if the economy is bothering business or what but here lately business has pretty much dropped off the radar. As good customer service I try to educate the customer a little bit on how to prolong the life of their system so they are not having to drag it back in. Downside to that is they get smarter and learn to do it on their own. So it's a catch 22. You want return business but you want your customers to feel secure as well and get what they paid for.

I thought of it like health insurance. I hate to pay into it but it gives me some self security knowing it is there when I need it. So what if I introduced a computer insurance program where people pay a certain amount a month that covers a percentage of the damage/repair needed. If the quantity was high enough it would be profitable but downside to it is promoting it. Be some definite loss starting off but hell I'm ready to try anything lately.

Think that would even sell? Thoughts?

    no.

why would I pay .... $10/month? $20/month?.... when my PC is mostly likely going to be fine for a year, and then I can bring it to geek squad to fix for $80?

Dumb idea but hell if I thought of 10 ideas and only 1 worked, then I just found 9 ways to not make an idea work :dunno:

How much time are you going to allow to each person? Is it more like a buy x hours at 25% off the regular rate or just a you pay into it and use it as much as is needed?

I haven't given the time factor a thought yet. I figure people would abuse it. Pay into it per month, use it when you need it.

I think it would work ok if you offered upto 2 hours per month included in the rate, then a discounted rate for additional hours as needed.

unless its super easy/no effort for them, most people prefer to do nothing until they're in a bind.
easier to sell based on quick gratification.

It would definitely be easier to do for laptops; desktops are a bitch to unhook and carry around. I think most people would just get their local computer geek to do it for them, though.

I get more desktops in here than laptops. If I had introduced this policy just recently I would be eating some costs on the two laptops right now. One needs an LCD the other is an LED which costs more. Third one wireless card isn't that expensive.

Then I have three desktops in here right now all with virus removal and one with vista that the password was changed and needed to be broken so those were easy. All the residential stuff I get in here is fairly easy to fix. Laptop parts cost more unfortunately.

Commercial clients I sell block hours to them at cheaper rates if they purchase a certain amount 5/10/15 hours and so on.

It's like the hosting biz a little bit, they sell ungodly amounts of space and bandwidth for little to nothing. But they bank on the users who don't abuse that. And for the most part they are pulling in some bank for it. They make extra off the other things that are not included in that package.

Think long-term though. All you have to do is charge enough that you'll make money on average.
