Preference mostly. I like chest/tri/shoulder on Mon, back/bi/traps on Wed, legs/calfs on Fri.

I'm a weight-lifting newbie, so I do a 3-day split instead of total body workouts. Back/Bi's, Chest/Tri's/Abs, Legs/Shoulders, on a 3-on-1-off-3-on-2-off basis, with 45-60min cardio sessions thrown in there after lifting most days. :dunno:

    ftw!

or 3 total body days, depending on which routine i'm on. your chest doesn't work in isolation in real life, so why should you isolate it at the gym?

To build mass you need to focus on specific groups each session and work until failure. The Circuit training method lends itself more to toneing and weightloss when done properly.
