how do you prevent your body from plateauing when working out
shock your muscles, either stop working out for an entire week to let your muscles loose their memory or change up your workout and always increase the weight even if its 5 pounds.
Change routine, take a lighter week where you dont max out, start aiming for more repetitions than increased weight, increase sets, many variations of things you can do when you plateau.
If we could all increase weight 5 pounds every week we'd up our lifts 260 lbs per year.

you told him to try and increase the weight 5 pounds every week which usually isn't that easy to do. There are other ways to increase load than by increasing weight.
