Working out while sick?

    I've heard it's bad for you, because your body obviously isn't 100%. I've also heard it's not a bad idea, because it will boost your heart/immune system etc.

    I'm sick. Started yesterday, and I'm not going to class today. Yesterday afternoon (I knew it was gonna hit me hard soon but wasn't full-on sick yet) I did 20 minutes on the eliptical (hard settings) and that's all.

    I'm obviously not gonna lift or anything, but is it a bad idea to go do a little cardio while sick? Should I just hang out for a few days then go when I'm 100%?

    What are your thoughts?

    I thought I had just a headcold but I just about passed out during cardio and lifting so I think I'll take a day or two off. I have 60 or so years left to train in my life, I don't think a few days will hurt.

    I think it depends how sick you are or what kind of sickness you have, but in general I lift while sick. Just go gentle and focus more on form than strength.

    i skip if im sick. fever + elevated body temp from exercising + dehydration = fail. i also take vitamin c so i dont get sick in the first place

    working out while sick fucking sucks.

    you won't get your normal workout in, and will possibly get others sick.

    take off 2-3 days and rest....its not a big deal in the long run.

    I'm somewhat sick this week (sore throat), but I missed a day last week due to Mardi Gras and I feel like I can't miss another for a while :o Also, it hasn't really had much of an effect on my lifts, although I felt lightheaded while squatting yesterday

    trust me on this.. i tried to play tommy toughguy and go when I first got the flu (didn't know it was flu but thought it was rather a sinus infection) and it was the worst mistake I ever made. Not only was I being "that guy" coughing violently in between squat sets but I KNOW i really paid for it the following days. Now I have to fucking sit browsing the internet and wait for myself to get better when I could have been over this by now. Besides you are risking others catching what you have. The gym is already an unsanitary place already, don't ruin someones day by trying to be hero. Just take some time off (which my skinny ass didn't want to do) and rest. It really does suck whenever you are pushing hard towards your goals and you know time off is going to set you back. At least I can sit here and stare at all the goodies my gf bought me from nutraplanet :wtc:

    Oh yeah your lifts will suck too. :endrant:

    if you go to the gym, people will hate you, especially me (i'm currently sick from an asshole coming to the gym sick, and yes i'm not working out today)

    Working out while I'm sick, makes me feel better...also is a good way to get water in me

    I was kinda possibly getting sick earlier this week, did a round of chest and the next day I didn't hardly get out of bed I was so sick :ugh:

    I work out as long I am not really sick. If I have a runny nose or the occasional cough, I'll go. I'm sick all the time since I started teaching and if I took off everyday I had some ailment I'd be in the gym 4 days per month. Also, I am pretty clean/anal about stuff when I am sick and will wash my hands if I sneeze/cough etc.

    :werd: The last time I got sick was from some douchenozzle at the gym.

    If you really feel you need to be able to work out while you're sick do stuff at home where you won't get others sick with your plague.

    Depends on the type of sick... if I have a cold. I sometimes work out harder and feel fan-fucking-tastic afterwards.

    your co-workers and the other people at the gym will appreciate it. I'm sick right now because some thoughtless asshole from work decided he could "tough it out"
