can someone recommend me a good word processor?
something a bit more heavy duty than Pages... I don't particularly want to use MS office...but if that actually is the best one.

I assume it isn't out in universal binary yet, so how's the performance under rosetta?

    tnks

Open Office!!! definitely give it a shot. it's worth the price.

has anyone else heard that the file extensions for the mac version of ms office are going to change. something like .xdoc or .docx

Appleworks is a pretty good one, but it doesn't save in .doc format as the default and sometimes when you save a document as .doc and try and open in microsofrt word it gets messed up.
Other than this it's a pretty good program.

MS Office under rosetta is fine. It isn't too slow of the majority of tasks. For an alternative, I highly recommend OpenOffice. You can also look into NeoOffice, which is based on OpenOffice. The difference is that NeoOffice comes more tightly integrated into Mac OS X.

for my personal use i love pages. it is great for both editing and design; the export to .doc doesnt work all that well but for me i just try to avoid it altogether by using word when i have to or just sending pdfs.

neo office is a good choice. Play around with Pages too more, it can do more than you think.
