    well, almost free.

i finally got the ball rolling on getting eye surgery, and since i'm missing our upcoming deployment it's the perfect time for me to get it.

the good news is that since i'm aircrew i get priority, although i still have some pre-op stuff and military paperwork, so i probably won't get the surgery until februaryish.

i also found out both LASIK and PRK are approved for my aircraft, but i think i'll let the surgeon tell me which is my best bet.

only downside is that it's a permissive TDY so i have to foot the bill for transpo, billetting, and incidentals (i'm choosing to do it at Lackland - WHMC). should be a good time though, i have some friends in the area.

I thought you couldn't fly unless you had 20/20 vision?

i'm not sure what the current vision requirements are for pilots (i think it's 20/70), but you just have to be correctable to 20/20

    i'm 20/200, but with contacts i'm 20/20 (i'm also a navigator, not a pilot)

20/50 in the Army now. PRK and Lasik has made eyesight standards more lenient.

it's not the surgeries that make it more or less lenient, it's the demand for pilot slots. the AF bounced from 20/40 to 20/100 to 20/70 while i was in ROTC.

most of the pilots who get LASIK or PRK are not the new guys - it's mostly the older pilots whose vision has gone to shit since they joined. since the surgery is considered a "success" if they get you to 20/40, there aren't too many pilots that fall into the category of really needing it.

Sucks, by the end of day four you start to wonder if you will ever see again.

I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Damn. My brother had lasik done and he was fine by the next day. Came home after the surgery, slept all day, woke up the next day with perfect vision.

Yep, LASIK was not offered at the time.
LASIK actually burns the inside of your eye.
PRK burns the outside of your eye, and then it has to heal without scarring.

all USAF active duty personnel are eligible for the free surgery - under the "warfighter" eye surgery program. different AFSCs have different priorities but everyone is eligible, so long as they meet the physical requirements and their commanders approve.

How do you go about obtaining this cheap almost free surgery? I have 20/1000 (Yes, I don't know how I enlisted with it..lol) correctable to 20/50 and would love lasik.

There is a range of vision you have to fall within. Go talk to your ENT to find out if you qualify for the surgery.

Its things like this that piss me off. 12 years ago when I was getting ready to get out of HS it was 20/20 PERIOD. Fucked me out of my dream job as an Air Force Fighter Pilot (F-16 FTMFW). Instead I joined the Navy and became a Nuclear Reactor Operator.

thats weird becasue I think you have to get a waiver to get in, in a rated slot if you had lasik or prk. But you can get it once your in and have a rated slot.

as a former Nuke plant operator I can tell you that I think I would've much more enjoyed being a pilot:o

The engine room on a Submarine is an uncomfortably hot and loud place to spend the day working underway. When you're 400+ ft submerged at ahead 2/3rds to nowhere you get bored really fast.

You want to get prk done. Don't let them do lasik because it will disqualify you from certain planes and/or jobs.
