I'm looking for info on self defense ammo to carry I have my CCW license but don't what ammo is good for carrying. I know about federal hydro shok, speer gold dot and winchester ranger. But don't really know the difference when it comes down to different grains with them for carrying? I have a glock 23 .40S&W that I carry.

Are there any other good brands or types within the brands I listed? Any info helps...

My main mag is loaded with 147gr gold dots and my spare mag is loaded with Federal hydrashock 127gr +p+. I carry a 229R in 9mm.

I carry the Gold Dots in my 9mm. I haven't had to shoot anyone yet, so I can't comment on their effectiveness.

This. Buy a few from it, shoot them and see what you shoot best.

I've always wondered if there was a site that listed what type of caliber and rounds the local PD were using at the time.

I might be a little paranoid, but it would make the killer bullets argument a bit of a mute point if it isn't already.

That and it would make choosing an effective round (in principle at least) easier.

I think I'm currently have 230 grain Federal hydra shock, but lately I've been rethinking that.

    180 gr Speer Gold Dots
The 165 gr have been shown to expand a little bit better.
