I'm getting tired of having terrible cheek weld having my Aimpoint on top of my fixed A2 upper, and tired of the limited configurations on said upper. And would like to go ahead and get a stripped flattop receiver and all the necessary parts to install it properly. I can order one locally from a shop downtown, but im betting that it would cost 1.5x as much as ordering it online from a good re-seller (Im headed down there tomm. to find out what they would want $$ wise). Plus im not exactly sure on all the parts (armorers wrench?) needed to perform the swap.

Basically I want to go from this limited setup:

To a more versatile setup like this (where I could add the 3x later):

While getting decent parts (no need to take out a second mortgage for the LaRue stuff :mamoru: I just want a dependable setup that is economical)

isnt there a mount that puts the aimpoint in front of the carry handle?

Anyways, what you'll need is a vise. Armor block or something similar. Barrel wrench. Punch. Hammer. And that should be it.

Punch set from Sears. Might want to look into nail punches with the concave face.

Cool, yeah I really want to go the right way and just change the upper over to the flattop. In the long run it will allow much greater versatility and customization should I chose to modify my optics and their arrangement. The drop forward rail is a nice "quick-fix" but really doesn't help much in fully customizing a good setup. With the flattop I can then get a good flip down rBUIS and have a lower 3rds co-witness going. I will probably leave my FSP as-is since I dont really need it to flip down and out of the way.

With the armor vice/grip thing, is that designed to go into a bench vice? So you can get a good grip/leverage on the receiver? Im guessing you need to put A LOT of torque on the delta ring/barrel lugnut.

Yes, it goes into a vise. I dont know if Lowe's still has them. But I bought a cheap $20 visa from them. Then a $30 "table" from them. $10 for bolts. And now I have a portable and compact "work bench".

Good point. I have had an account there since 05. I actually helped you out in that QD-AK-uhmbrella mount thread

Hmm ill have to check it out. I have no experience with EE, so I dont want to get fucked over. Ill have to take a look around. If you see something over there, let me know, I'd greately apreciate it.

Thats what I was going to go with, but in the end, you still have a limited setup down the line. I have been meaning to do the flattop exchange for awhile now, and have been putting off. Its time to go the proper route.

Probably somewhere around $100 for something like a DPMS all the way up to $200-250 for larue. And it ships to your door.

I've heard good things about them, if I were the OP I'd just go for it since he's already got all the parts to build a complete upper sans the receiver.
