Okay so I'm doing the class Saturday, but because of the way things are in this town, it will be October before I am actually licensed. Anyway.

I will most likely just use my Hi-Point niner to qualify, but for the future I will want to have something that can actually be carried. I don't want to spend more than $350-400 absolute maximum, and I want something as slim and svelte as possible. At 5'3" 140lb there is not much room for excess on my frame :hs:

The current frontrunners are the Ruger LCP, because well, obvious. And it looks like a higher quality piece, or at least is from a higher quality marque, than the Kel-Tec P3AT. Second is the Bersa Thunder, because I like it, and unlike the LCP would be fun to shoot at the range. Actually, I could see myself owning both of these at some point, but that wouldn't be for a while. Gun shop had a used Bersa Thunder two-tone for $199 last time I was there.

The other option is a Makarov, but it's not going to be nearly as easy to buy as the other two. Next show in this area is 5 weeks from this weekend, and who knows if someone will have a German or Bulgy for an acceptable price. Or, for that matter, if I even know what a good one looks like. Same gun shop does have a used CZ-82, however... and a bunch of PA-63s (no thanks). I do have in mind the power difference between a .380ACP and a 9x18.

I'm not sure if there are any other good options I am missing, but if you know any, let 'em fly.

If you can get one with a couple mags, I'd suggest taking a look at the Sig P6/P225's that have been coming in from Germany.
Standard 9x19mm caliber (not .380 or 9x18 Mak, standard 9mm), usually available for around $300 depending on when/where/how you buy, sometimes a little less, sometimes a bit more.

They're Sigs, so they should be fairly dependable (people who have them on here seem to like them well enough). Single stack, so they're fairly slim, too.

I would save a little more money and get a decent gun such as the glock 19. Don't really trust the Ruger LCP. Somebody on here had one and it went to shit. He took a bunch of pics of it too. Seemed like the hammer was off center if I recall correctly. Something about the design.

I wouldn't mind looking into an LCP, but at this point probably wouldn't trust it to be my main carry gun.
Heard good things about the Bersa Thunder... but it's going to be a bit bulkier and heavier than an LCP.
In that price range, you're kind of limiting yourself to used guns if you want anything relatively respectable and reliable.
A used G26 would be a good fit, but they're a little thick for your frame.

    Why not a small revolver like a S&W 442/642?

I'd use those as a BUG and not a primary.

I gots me a .357 airlite that's good, but with a 2" barrel it would be nice to have more than 5 rounds.

Sorry, but J-frames are NOT good beginner pistols. My first carry gun was a German Mak, nice and compact and dead nuts reliable.

With the price of them, the Sig 225's look like they could be interesting. And on a budget, I've heard great things about the Bersa's.

    My pick as well.

$350 would be doable if you watched the boards. I remember someone having them new for $26x, but it was online and I can't remember the store. I'm thinking I saw it over at SigForum in the FS ad section.

I understand what it means to be on a budget, so with 400 max to use I'd look at the already suggested p6 to come in low. But I would prefer a used XD9 service over a P6. They're not so uncommon if you search.

    Example:
XD9 with 2 regular mags for 360+20 bucks for shipping and probably 20 or less transfer fee. Total = 400.

Edit: Not slim though. :hs: Still worth it.

I have one, it's alright. Wouldn't carry it though, too heavy. It actually just sits in my night stand drawer loaded with Hydra Shocks

The aluminum framed autos would be no worse than a cz-82/83 or a makarov plus they'd shoot a reasonable caliber. Ymmv.
