    what are some good programs you can download to search for a connection with a wireless network card? or is this even they correct way to go about this type of thing?

    netstumbler is popular. most wireless nics will come with their own utility that allows you to scan for waps so you really only need netstumbler for wardriving.

    for just seeing what you can connect to, then use what came with the wnic. However, netstumbler is a fun utility to mess with -- and has helped me diagnose dead spots, before.
