So I just bought a linksys WRT54G wireless router, one of the reasons being there are alot of custom firwares available for it. Now, can I use it as more than just a wireless access point for other devices to connect to or can I use it to scan for other networks in my area??

No, I believe you would need a wireless NIC in a computer, and you could use that to scan for other networks in your area. I'm pretty sure that the router will act as a router/accesspoint.

If you install OpenWRT on it that may do some other things. I haven't played with it myself, but a buddy of mine has and it's pretty neat.
