My house shares a wireless connection with the people upstairs. On one of their computers, there is a file that I need, is there a way for me to access that through the wireless connection or do I have to setup a network from her computer in order to do so? I know that the files have to be shared on the network, but how do I access it?

Ok, well I did that, but it says that it's not found, so how would I set up a network to allow that?

What did you do on your friend's machine? Is that folder shared? (a shared folder looks like a regular folder, but with a hand under it.)

What OS is each machine running? I imagine you have a router, right? What kind? Is the computer you need the file on wired or wireless?

Try to get the IP of the macine and see if you can ping it.

Both running XP SP2, she is plugged in directly to the router, I'm wireless, it's a NetGear router. How do I figure out her IP?

ipconfig will give you the IP.

Wired or wireless on the same router will allow you to network.

You just sometimes have to set a few things up to get it to work correctly.

I said to get the IP address of the machine you want to connect to so you can ping it to make sure the the two machines can see each other on the network.

Go to a command prompt and type Ping xxx.xxx.x.x

If you get a reply there is communication. You can try browsing Network Neighborhood to look for the computer name. BTW, make sure each machine in in the same workgroup. It will make things easier.

If you are having problems, make sure file and print sharing is turned on.
