My sister bought a used Emachine and she wants to wipe it. My laptop came with a disk to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. Can I use that disk on her PC?
Her PC is a desktop (Emachine) and mines a laptop (Toshiba) I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

if you're using a disk from the manufacturer it's best if the system and the disk are the same (emachine os disk on emachine comp). you can go ahead and use the toshiba disk but it's likely that you'll have a rough time when attempting to activate windows. if you do run into trouble activating windows just call emachine and order one of their os disks. they'll charge ya but it'll save you the headaches of having to call microsoft tech support to work out activation issues.

What you could do, is use a key finder on the emachine to find the existing serial number.

Then find someone who has the same operating system and borrow their disc, and use the serial number you get from the key finder.
