    Hey everyone.

    Quick question.
In our small little company, we have one primary domain controller. We just recently expanded by about 30 employees. So, I wanted to configure a backup domain controller.

The PDC ip address is 111.111.111 = for example
The PDC WINS primary address is 111.111.111.111 = for example.
Its seconday WINS address is also 111.111.111.111.

The BDC ip address is 222.222.222.222 = for example.

Should my BDC also have 111.111.111.111 for its WINS settings or should it use 222.222.222.222 for its WINS settings (which would be its own ip address?) Primary WINS? Secondary WINS?

Primary WINS should stay the same regardless of which computer you're setting. Same thing goes with DNS and any other service you're running.

Setup 222.222.222.222 as the secondary WINS server, and have all machines set accordingly?

Ok, next question. I am completely new to this IT position. Kinda got scrubbed into it because someone in our company left. So, my question is, in english, what is WINS and what is it used for?

Short for Windows Internet Naming Service, a system that determines the IP address associated with a particular network computer. This is called name resolution. WINS supports network client and server computers running Windows and can provide name resolution for other computers with special arrangements. Determining the IP address for a computer is a complex process when DHCP servers assign IP addresses dynamically. For example, it is possible for DHCP to assign a different IP address to a client each time the machine logs on to the network.

WINS uses a distributed database that is automatically updated with the names of computers currently available and the IP address assigned to each one.

DNS is an alternative system for name resolution suitable for network computers with fixed IP addresses.

So, my PDC and BDC should both have the same WINS address for both primary and secondary WINS addressing.

    Example:
    PDC Primary WINS: 111.111.111.111
    PDC Secondary WINS 111.111.111.111

    BDC Primary WINS: 111.111.111.111
    BDC Secondary WINS 111.111.111.111

    Is that correct?

BTW, each server has a static IP address.

No, both servers should have the same settings regardless of the what the role is. 111 for the primary, 222 for the secondary.
