what do you all think of arts like wing chun in mma? can they be effective?
Yes. Wait, no.
care to elaborate anyone? why wouldnt tma work in the cage?
cause most TMA doesn't involve actual sparring.
As far as specifically wing tsun and kung fu: I've seen Paul Vunaks tapes and they are pathetic. The straight blast would never work against somebody who doesn't piss themsleves when they get slapped in the face. The one time I saw Vunak try a straight blast on a student in a "live" session, Vunak got hit hard 3-4 times, he actually looked like he got dizzy.
The student had to lay off a bit and throw pitter patter punches to give Vunak the chance to actually push away his hands and pull off a straight blast. It was hilarious to watch.
Because most of them don't practice against live resisting opponents.
watch UFC 1-5
are there exceptions to the rule? or is every tma "dead"? I only ask because i take wing chun, we spar "all out" whatever you want to call it. We train grappling as well, would something like that work in the cage in yalls opinions?
so its the way the system is practiced not the system itself?
i would agree with this statement...if you guys train all out, you'll probably see that some moves don't work. I forget the name but the one where you block with your foreman obviously doesn't work during sparring.
my tiger form will destroy your wing chung kunk fu
You can't learn to fight without fighting.
Its not that they are ineffective its just that they aren't /as/ effective as BJJ/Wrestling/MT etc....
Yeah but if they sparred all out using techniques that don't work in MMA (seriously, have you've seen wing chun in "action"?), it doesn't mean jack because they're just practicing using techniques that aren't realistic in MMA.
there are techniques and principles from LOTS of arts that can have a place in the cage. that being said, unless you train specificly for using them in the cage, chances are you won't make them work.
traditional martial arts need to be applied correctly if your gonna use it in MMA, and it certainly wont work unless u spar at 100%
that said, if you want to fight mma, your better of going with wrestling, bjj, mauy thai, boxing, judo
personally imo the take down is inevitable unless your going against someone who is specifically trained in anti take down technqiue, and dont count on your system of wing chuns grappling if your fighting a wrestler or a bjjer.
and finally leave your WC school if they teach you anything like this http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=31697
man this last UFC has really brought them out of the woodwork.
I can't believe there's 85 pages of this shit.
mantis style up in this place!
