I'm having a problem with a machine I am working on for a friend. This is now the second time I have seen this and have not been able to find a solution.

The computer will turn on, POST, etc..., but right before the XP splash screen, the screen goes blank for about 5 mintues (literally) before it boots up. The hard drive light just turns off for the 5 minutes, then when it comes back on, the machine boots. After that everything is fine.

I'm not sure where to start since all my searching has turned up posts for when boot up time is slow AFTER the XP splash screen not BEFORE.

Any ideas? I figure someone has had to see this problem before...

    Thanks,

I'd like to help you out, but i'll need more info. How powerful is his power supply? And how old is the hard drive itself. When you boot into safe mode does this happen too?
